Replacement W213 key for $750
that’s what I was told at the dealership. Will cost me $750 to replace my spare key. I can’t belive I have to pay that much. Anyone know a less expensive way of getting a key?

Unfortunately dealer is your only option, comparison shop a number of dealers.

$575 - transponder
$175 - mechanical key cutting
$175 - programming
I shopped around and my agent was kind enough to match another dealership that waived the programming if you purchased the key from them. That said, imagine my horror when I saw an employee drop my old key into a concrete pavement

Yup, I made the mistake of leaving my key fob in my pants and put my pants in the washer. The key fob still works, but intermittently. I would take the chance and use it, but would hate to get stranded by the key fob not working.

I had a bad fob, replaced under warranty. Car was at the dealer 3 weeks! They thought it was something else, they said remotes should last the life of the car.
To get a new remote requires a dealer to get authorization from Mercedes in Germany to program a new fob. They said theft in the past was a big problem and put a lid on key programming.
200k car can easily be stolen by a key reprogram in the wrong hands.
I think it’s a wild rip off $750 for a small circuit board and some plastic.

If you lose a fob and purchase a new one does the dealer de-activate the old fob? I lost mine around the house somewhere and am ready to get a new one, but if/when I find the old one will IT still work?

Wow. We can all appreciate the technology in our MB's automobiles but one would think that the manufacturer could be a bit more "forgiving" in terms of a replacement key fob price.
It's not like they only buy a few sets from their supplier and likewise, if purchasing a replacement key fob it should at least come with both the cutting and the programing inclusive at no additional charge. $750 is robbery! Considering a ~ avg. MSRP of 75K, the two key fobs alone represent 2% of the car's value.

Bobby,
The dealer can deactivate keys, I don’t know if it is their procedure, automatically.
I bought a new fob last year, and the dealer deactivated the missing fob for me as part of the “programming” labor.

Except tires wear out, so if we keep the car long enough, we have to replace them. Not so with the key fob.
I shouldn't say that: My wife lost her wedding ring last week, and can't figure out where it went. A custom mounting with her engagement diamond, her mother's engagement diamond, and a new diamond. :-( Have looked pretty much everywhere. Wish it had been a key fob instead.
