Waze app works good via apple car play or android auto
Finally got around to loading IOS 12 on my iPhone and then reloaded the Waze Nav app and it works great. Shows right up on the main apple car play screen. I forgot to check today to see if the directions come right up on the HUD windshield screen but think they might, I'm really sure they do with Android Auto. Waze not only does nav but is good for speed trap warnings and red light cam warnings and traffic information.

Great do you have an iPhone or android? If Android I think it might show up on the HUD if you have that option. I don't have HUD in my Wagon but do in my Cabriolet which I've not tried the waze in yet but when I do I'll see if the directions come up on the HUD screen. My understanding is from another person on the AMG forums that with HUD the directions only appear if you are using the Android Auto. Not that big a deal, but who knows maybe at this point it works with iPhone with they way apple is so quick to update software and all. It will be interesting using the Waze once I start doing more highway driving like this upcoming weekend.

I have an Android (Galaxy S9+). I had used Android Auto with Google Maps and directions/nav did show up in the HUD. I'll ensure to verify that with Waze. Candidly, I'm eager to see if Waze works at all in the Auto app since it hadn't for a long time...

That's interesting that you're getting turn indications from Qaze on the HUD. It must be an android thing as I've never seen anything other than the MB Navi appear there.

I've heard it did and maybe still does work direction on the HUD but only with Android. It definitely does not work on the HUD with IOS 12 on the iPhone, I confirmed that today in my Cabriolet which has heads up. Oh well, I really don't use that feature much anyhow, I find it distracting. It is great to have the waze up and running though via apple car play. It is a very useful app.
