Sedan vs Coupe Engine Noise in Cabin
A friend who owns a W212 E250 Coupe recently asked me if I found my W213 E250 engine noisy. He mentioned it clattered and was generally noisy driving around town and on the highway.
So far, I have found my W213 very quiet and cannot hear much engine noise at all, certainly nothing above my expectations. On the highway, its very very quiet and I don't even have the acoustic package.
Is the W213 Sedan quieter than the W212 Coupe ? or does my friend and I have different hearing sensitivities?. I read the E250 coupe was based on the C-class so I suspect there might be a structural reason why the coupe is noisier as it also has a strong lower chassis to compensate for no roof? and having no proper roof means less noise insulation?
Just wondering...

Try riding in it and see for yourself, is it a coupe or a cabrio? Cab is probably noisier as the direct inject noise is not filtered out as much. I also think its a structural reason. Personally I find my e200 (same engine) a bit noisy around town when accelerating, would have expected a more civilised engine.

Download a decibel meter app on your iPhone, then measure the sound level in each car, at the same speed over the same surfaces.

I find my 2019 E450 Cab very quiet with the top up. Surprisingly so for a ragtop.
Now, that being said, I only have two things to compare to... 1) My former 2013 Escape Titanuim. This supposedly “Ecoboost” 4 cyl engine was noisy. Trying to get on the freeway sounded quite loud... and don’t even get me started on the terrible gas mileage... Escape got apx 16 mpg around stop and go town and I never got more than 28 on the highway. My 6 cyl, Bi-turbo E450 gets around 17 in the city and about 28-29 on the highway. Only thing that makes the E450 slightly more expensive (gas-wise) is the Premium has.
2). My E450 Cab was in the shop a couple times for small annoying stuff. Had two loaners... first was a 2018 E300 Sedan. Not impressed. Engine seemed underpowered and noisy when trying to get to speed. The second time was a C-250 (don’t know the year). Let’s not even go there. Noisy, small, tech absolutely sucked and that teeny tiny screen 🤮. Now in all fairness I’m sure loaner cars (for e-class customers, at least) are probably equipped minimal options.
