NHTSA Complaint

Today I filed a complaint with the NHTSA regarding sudden braking while using adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assistant.
The short story is that today I was traveling at 35 mph on a straight, flat, dry 2 lane residential street with no obstacles within a quarter mile.
Without warning the car went into crash prevention mode with maximum braking (squealing tires). The seat belt retraction left a chest bruise.

This was a very frightening experience I do not wish to repeat. If there was following traffic, it would not have been able to stop in time.

That is a very worrying development. So sorry to hear that.

I do hope you are well now.

Please get a dashcam and record all of this that is happening, Mercedes needs to be held responsible, just like tesla is when something happens. You might save hundreds of lives around the world with your reporting.

Try changing the setting to early warning. That resolved this issue for me.

My settings are already at early warning and middle distance following. There was nothing in front or behind within range and nothing on either side that was moving.

I agree that is a scary experience. Sorry it happens but I have a similar problem with my BMW (although not nearly as bad). About 5% of the time when backing it thinks there is something behind you, screams a warning, and then locks up the brakes. Even after pulling forward and trying it again several times it continues to stop the car. I even have mine on video doing it. This is very scary in the school parking lot pick up area since you think you might have ran over someone. Sometimes I can over power it by pressing the gas but other times I just have to drive off ans try it again another way. I feel as these cars are so smart and manufacturers roll out technology before it is ready for prime time sometimes.
My remedy for this is I've just ordered a new MB and I'm going to get rid of the BMW. Good luck with yours!

Your logic is a bit odd. The OP claimed to have a similar experience to yours in your BMW and you're buying a MB telling everyone to not buy a BMW?

I have a 2018 BMW X5 diesel and never experienced what you've described above. It could be something with your specific car that needs to be checked out or repaired.

Since you haven't walked in my shoes (owned a cars I have) I don't think it is "odd" at all. My BMW is nothing but trouble and my local dealer and sevice department are horrible compared to my local MB dealership. I'll take that small probem that the OP has if I can get out of my BMW and back into a MB and never have to drive, own, put money into, sit in, or deal with a BMW again.

What you originally said and what you said now are very different, experiencing lots of issues and a poor BMW dealer makes sense in wanting to avoid another BMW, still there are other dealers who might have given you a completely different experience. Originally, you made it sound like due to one negative false braking situation you wanted to avoid all BMW's. I had a poor experience with four Audi dealers in the Boston area when I lived there and have not purchased another Audi since.

How could you possibly know if I've owned the cars you have? That statement is ridiculous.

2018 S560 and 2019 E450 Wagon.
Sorry to hear of your experience UA. So far knock on wood I have not experience anything like this with my Wagon, Cabrio and 2018 E63 AMG Wagon when I had that for a year. That sounds scary and perplexing. Sounds almost like some kind of signal got into the car or something? I see Tesla is in the news today of some company that was able to hack into it's adaptive cruise.

Have you taken it in yet to the dealership to have it checked out? I assume this hasn't ever happened before. Pretty scary situation.
