The quasi-office managers at the local dealerships who are members of these auto groups really have no authority to negotiate the selling price below what the corporate procurement group (or whatever they are called) has set the price at. Any margins in between go to the dealer itself so they are far less competitive than the smaller, home town, family owned independent dealers. Today the auto business is all about gross volumes on a nationwide a scale and little to do with the individual purchasing an automobile,(i.e. single unit/customer).
All that said, establishing one's self as a repeat customer with an independent dealer takes time, i.e. many years, many cars but ultimately leads to getting the best deals to be found.
