How does the oil sensor work?

I am assuming it's an oil sensor in the W213 that counts the days until service is due (EIther A or B). Or is it automatically set in the computer and once you reset it goes back to whatever service is due next? I am asking because say I change the oil in my W213 and forget to reset the oil light or I change the oil earlier than what's recommended (and don't reset the light or I reset it before the "Service A" or "Service B" due light shows up). Would there be any harm done to the car or computer?

Unless I am completely mistaken, all the oilsensor does is measure how much oil is there... just like a dipstick functions. It does not tell you what state the oil is in or when it will be appropriate to change - nor does it influence the service interval. Service interval is measured on days alone - pre determined by mercedes.

it will basically tell you if its running dry(in which case you put something in)

if you do your own oilchanges but still rely on the garage to do the normal service, then just tell them that they should not touch the oil, as you got that covered.
