Question About Rim Downsizing

Hi there,

I'm a new member in the forum. I'm expecting to get my W213 E350e to be delivered to Finland within 2-3 weeks from Germany. However I just found out that the car doesn't have winter tires from the dealer so I need to buy one because Finnish winter can be really extreme although I live at the Southern part.

I have asked a couple of local shops here for a new set (wheels + tires) all of them offers brand new set 18" size with Michelin studded tires at around €1600-€1800 including installation and TPMS. I asked them if I can fit 17" on my car they say I can't, 18" wheels are the best fitment.

I don't want to spend that much for a new set because it will be ruined anyway. So I started searching second hand wheels and I have found some 16" and 17" with ET 33 - 43. How small the wheels I can fit to the car ?

Thanks for all your help.

The car in question is below, it has AMG Line exterior and 19" AMG wheels according to the dealer.

One of the wheel set I found, IIRC this one was used by older E-Class (W211 ?) ET 33, 16"

This one is 17", ET unknown but used on W212, tires by Nokian 225/55

I believe the issue relates to brake clearance. Certain MB models may have larger brakes (U29 Sport Brake System) thus requiring 18" or larger wheels.

The size of your rotors combined with brake size is the main issue for not being able to go lower than a certain size. I have a 2017 E300 Luxury model and it came with 17” rims. It’s better to go with used OEM than new because any issues MB will say it’s the aftermarket rims. Good luck and enjoy, they are great cars. I have attached a couple photos of my 17”

Hi, mine is 220D 4Matic and it's located in Bulgaria and the lowest i can go is 17" because of four-wheel drive. I saw some MBs with 16" but i suppose they are RWD. At this moment (winter season) the car now is with 17" 225/55 and they are the same with my summer kit. The car came with 2 sets of identical rims and tires (winter and summer).
But when i looked at www.wheel-size.com for 350e there the lowest option is 18".

Wow, thanks for the detailed reply and pictures for comparison.

I’m definitely thinking to get the 17” that the older E class had.

I also found in many Finnish wheel dealers websites that they write W213 with AMG brakes or normal brakes. If I chose AMG brakes it will show only up to 18” not even 17”, but if I choose non AMG then they showed 17” wheels.

It also got me confused.

I have heard that we can check the options we have in our MB by writing our VIN to certain website and it will show all of the information of the car.
Do you have any recommendation which one is the accurate or official?

Thanks.

There are many vin decoders available. I use the one here at MBWorld.org. Just click on the Tools drop down menu at the top of the page.
