2021 E450 All Terrain
E450 All Terrain Wagon

I recently purchased a 2021 E450 All Terrain Wagon. When I read the Owner's Manual (which appears to be for a prior model), on page 293 it advises, before entering a car wash, switching off active brake assist, active distance assist DISTRONIC, Hold function, active parking assist, etc. It also warns that the tailgate may open unintentionally. I believe I have figured out how to switch off all of the assist functions. But I have found no way to deactivate the tailgate Hands-Free Access function (p. 75) which it appears the car wash may activate. Has anyone taken one of these cars through a car wash successfully? Are these real risks?

If it similar to the sedan, there is a switch in the glove box on the upper left side.

I believe it is called the "valet switch": on my 2019 E450 it is also in the glove box, but lower left side.

BTW, the only thing I turn off, (if I remember) is the windshield wipers. Nothing else and so far, 2 1/2 years and many car washes, no problems.

I leave on all the safety features you mention.

Ya me too, never had a problem with the tailgate coming open or anything. I just hit the mirror button so the mirrors flip in and turn off the beeper for the parking assist and thats about it. 2 years and no issues.

Good gosh, I never thought about the tailgate or trunk open - like 2012 and martin, I just fold the mirrors and dive in.

I've never thought about it either. The hands-free option to raise the tailgate in my wagon is so temperamental and almost never works , in any event, so maybe I don't need to worry about it.

Try extending your foot well forward underneath the bumper, then bringing it back out QUICKLY, like a reverse kick.

Well, I'll be jiggered. I'd never have thought of reverse kicking. It's certainly more reliable that way. There must be a reason for that kind of sensitivity.

I can't locate any such switch in my glove box, or mention of it in my owners manual, for my MY20 E450 wagon (Canadian spec). There are a few warnings about car washes and the tailgate, but no mention about how to disable it.

Very interesting. My 2020 wagon doesn't have that switch, nor do I see mention of it in the owners manual.
