MPG Update
My E220d is 2.5 years old and I was astonished the other morning on my commute to work to see my average consumption was 4.2 L/100KM!! That's an astonishing 62MPG (imperial) or 56MPG US. That's a 40Km commute at +100 KMH typical average speed.
Most days I'd be getting 4.6-4.8.
I don't think diesel is dead quite yet.....

I still have a photo on my phone from when i drove through the Netherlands on their newly restricted (100kph) motorways:
156km (97miles) distance
95km/h (59mph) av speed
4.2l/100km (67.2mpg)
Regularly get 5.5l on the 620km+ drive to Bavaria (very hilly motorways) from my house in the North of Germany (3 up) driving at about 130 to 135kph. I even tow our 1800kg caravan at about 10!

Agreed, it's a great engine. Not only economical but very quiet and smooth too. I came from a 3 litre BMW diesel and was amazed how quiet the Merc engine is.

Sometimes it's easy to forget it's only a bog standard 2 litre diesel (that is actually quicker than a MK2 Golf GTI 16v 0 to 60) hauling around a 2 tonnes estate!

I generally drive in E but with the speed limiter engaged so that the car coasts when i lift off but I can keep a consistent speed. When towing on a motorway then i usually have the cruise on as the radar breaking is useful when at slower speeds with the caravan (say about 100kph/60mph).

AVG fuel consumption from whole period: 7.5L/100km (31 MPG US or 37.6 MPG UK)
Highway cruising:
140km/h(87 MPH): 6.4L/100km (36.7 MPG US or 44.1 MPG UK)
120-130 km/h (75-80 MPH): 5.9L/100km
Lowest: ecodriving around 90km/h (60MPH): 5.5L/100km (42.7 MPG US or 51.3 MPG UK) ... and I have lost my patience
City: 8.5L/100km (27.6 MPG US or 33.2MPG UK)

Yes, i can confirm, that diesel engines has a lot more to give. Yesterday i drove +350 km with a permanent speed of 180 km/h. And fuel consumption was 7.2l/ 100 km. Which is outstanding for +2 tons limo with luggage.
