Back Left Squeaking & Crack in COMAND Touchpad
I bought the car [E220d, 2018 Series] brand new. 38 months on and I have done 19,000 miles. I have two issues:
1/ Crack in the COMAND Touchpad through normal use. See below photo.
2/ Squeaking in the back left of the car. Listen to the attached.
I took the car to the Portsmouth dealer I bought the car originally from. Outcome:
- Charged me £60 assessment fee.
- Couldn't find where the sound was coming from and wanted to charge a rolling £180 per hour fee to find it. Naturally, I refused.
- The crack was denied as a free of charge replacement.
I am really frustrated and wonder what you would do in my position...any advice please?
I am outside the warranty by around 8 weeks, however, both issues were there for several months. The squeaking has progressively got worse and I wouldn't have taken the car to the dealership just for the crack.
Thank you very much.

Sorry to hear that you are experiencing these two issues, for the touch pad there is a service bulletin for it, please see attached.
As for squeaking, does it ever stop when driving? Like on certain roads, do roads have to be very bumpy for example. Please also tell us the body style of the vehicle you have, is it a sedan/saloon or something else?

The squeaking occurs on slightly bumpy roads. It will not occur on a motorway, for example. It's a E220d Sedan.
The document you attached I had checked but I was not sure if my car is covered under that based on the "model series"?
Thank you.

For the squeaking it does sound like interior trim pieces (if I am hearing it correctly), are there any trim pieces you put pressure on that squeak more than others?

IMO The crack in the command touch pad must have come from dropping something on it. It will not crack like that on its own. I have a similar crack… that was from when my father helped with replacing the steering and wasn’t carefull when turning the spanner… resulting in its handle came down hard on the comand touchpad when the steeringwheel nut gave way… I would say the force was equal to dropping a medium size screwdriver with its metal part on it from about 30 cm.
but you could have leaned on ot with your metal watch strap… it is only plastic, but it will need a harder item with some force to crack.

Thank you very much for this heads up! I have an 2018 E300 4Matic, and I can't tell if the service bulletin applies to my model/year -- but I have the same crack as in the picture. I bought the car a couple of months ago, at 39k miles, I know have 43k miles -- and I wanted to bring the car to the local MB dealer BEFORE the original manufacturer's warranty expired (at 48k miles). Are they not going to want to cover/replace it, and even more, aren't they just going to try and sell me a 50k mile service or something expensive? Thanks in advance!
