Which New tires

My 2017 E300 sport needs new tires. Currently, it has Goodyear Eagle Sport run flats. I'm considering the same ones but also Michelin Primacy 3...possibly Pirelli. Prices are similar. Does anyone have experience with these/recommendations. Also, one dealer told me that Primacy 3s are summer only tires and are dangerous below 40 degrees. I'm in Northern California where the temperature can occasionally get that low. Any thoughts about this? Thanks.

I've had poor mileage from Michelin tires. I've bought both Goodyear Eagle and Pirelli P-Zero & Cinturato in the past. My preference is Pirelli. The exact model depends on how you plan to use them. I have Cinturatos on my E300. I had P-Zeros on my 911.

I have the MOE all season Pirelli P7 Cinturato RF on my E450. Except for a bubble in each front tire, totally satisfied. It seems that RF may be more prone to bubbles than non RF. At 20,000 miles I still had 8/32 of tread life left on the front and 7/32 on the rear. For reference the new MOE Pirellis I put on my car to replace the ones with bubbles have 10/32 of tread life.

40 degrees: If you google "Winter Tires" you will see that on certain High Performance summer tires, the tire compound gets harder below 40 degree.

FWIW, I have driven my E450 with the Pirelli's at minus 10 Fahrenheit without any problems.

Hopes this helps.

I bought a spare when I bought a new set of non-RF Pirelli Cinturato P7's for my E300. The ride was noticeably better with the non-RF tires.

I just bought Continental ProContract GX run flat to replace worn Pirelli OEM on 2018 E300.. To me, Pirelli seems to offer good performance but poor treadwear life. I also considered Eagle Sport All Season and Michelin Primacy, but they were not in stock locally. I have had good experience with non-runflat Continental and Michelin on previous Mercedes and BMW. If you are not run flat you will have even more choices. Has anyone tried Bridgestone Driveguard? Good luck, and let us know your choice.

Back in 2006 had a Crossfire Convert that had summer Goodyear f1 summer tires, can tell you for certain that below 45 degrees these were like racing slicks on oil. Until the tires get warmer/hot they were scary and even when warmed up they were still unnerving. I would never drive summer tires in colder weather, again.

I've had extremely bad experiences with Michelin Pilot Sport tires. Here is what I posted in July 2017. I buy a set of tires every year for one of my cars. I have not bought any Michelin tires since.

Needless to say, I will no longer buy Michelin tires that are made in the US. I never had an issue with German made Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires.

Well that eliminates those, thank you.

Thanks for the advice. I learned a lot from this board and from calling dealers like Tire Rack. First, the Michelin Primacy 3 tires I was considering are summer tires and, as I said, are dangerous below 40 degrees. Secondly, Michelin does make an all season run flat tire but the Michelin tires are self sealing , which is a different kind of run flat than Goodyear (not sure about Pirelli). The Michelins apparently have a sealing compound inside rather than a rigid sidewall which would allow limited driving in the event of a flat. Bottom line-I went with the Goodyear Eagles, the same as the original equipment tires I'm replacing. I liked the ride and handling and encountered no problems with them. Normally I prefer Michelin tires and have always been happy.

Well below zero several times last winter, 3-4 inches of snow - no problem

I keep the tires at the recommended pressures that match the load for the day.
Some days there is more than 500 pounds in the trunk otherwise it is just me.
Due to low power the car is used strictly in the city. It rarely goes into 6th gear or over 35 mph.
It is over 4 years old with about 15k miles. The second set of tires are half worn.

I run Continental extremecontact DWS06 on my W204 C300 4matic and it runs like a beast in the winter and handles great in the summer.

Just bought the new version (DWS 06 Plus) for my CLS. 100% recommend

Just adding my 2 cents into this..
I've recently changed the stock Goodyear Eagle F1 MOE RFT to Micheline Pilot Sport 4s MO Non RFT.

The difference is significant. I can't say about the durability of it since I've only had it from August, but these Michelines are one of the best quality tyres I have ever felt in years.
The Ride quality is much better in a sense that its very quiet and the grip is absolutely fantastic, even on wet.

I've got sets of 20" AMG wheels which does not help with the ride comfort as well.

Just a quick note though, I had to change Eagle F1 due to bulging on the side walls on both front wheels which were very disappointing.

Lastly, must make sure to get MO or MOE spec. Apparently, they do make a difference. How much difference, I wouldn't know but...

So. Calif here. I got a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3's (non RFT) from Costco last year. Best decision ive made for the car. Ride quality improved dramatically (I have factory 20" wheels). I'll have to use by roadside assistance/AAA if I get a flat, but most RFT's wuld be in the same boat unless it was a pinole in the mid part of the tread, so I'll take the tradeoff.

Once again, big ride improvement: I really think it is the 20" and 19" wheels. Those of us who have the standard 18" do not have these problems, plus at 20,000 miles on my Pirelli P7 RF, I have 8/32 tread on front tires and 7/32 tread on rear tires: 10/32 is the tread on new tires so they are good for 30,000/40,000 miles!

One area that seems to be a problem with RF vs. non RF are bubbles: I had to replace both front tires because of bubbles.

My tires wear down to 4/32" tread depth every 12,000 miles. Front and rear tires wear equally. I drive 250 miles a month in stop and go city driving @ 35 mph or less - no highway miles. I wonder if the heat causing such wear. I monitor the tire temp display that typically shows 100° F to 120° F after driving a couple of miles. The second set of tires on my '18 E300 are half worn with 7/32" tread remaining. The car is MB maintained.

It may be the heat: Like you, I monitor my pressure each time I drive to check for any leaks. Only in the summer, when temps get above 85 degrees does the TPS show temps in the 115 degree range. I have found that tire temps are outside plus 30 degrees. 50 outside, tire temps get up to 80: 20 outside tire temps get up to 50 and 85 outside temps get up to 115.

It may be tire pressure: I maintain tire pressure at +2 as recommended on the fuel flap: My fuel flap recommends, for normal driving no extra load 33 psi. I keep mine, both summer and winter at 35 psi. That extra 2 psi really helps tire wear and handling.

It may also be the road surface you are driving on. I am not an expert on this so this is only a guess

Finally what size wheel do you have? It seems that the tires on the 19" and 20" wheels wear much faster than tires on the standard 18' wheel. I have the standard 18" wheels.

Pirelli Cinturato P7 non-RFT 245/45R18

For November 2021 our max temperature was 85° F and the average temperature was 76° F.

The same size wheel as mine - yet tremendous difference in tread wear.

I never accelerate hard and my local driving is like yours at 35/45 mph, some stop and go, but not like New York City stop and go and the balance on the interstate at 70/75 mph.

So it must either be the temperature or the road surface.

I think it must just be you or the roads in your area/heat. The AS 3 and AS 3 plus were pretty popular and I had them and they were fine, got the 30-40k out them and they were only good for 45k anyway. The newer pilot sport A/S 4 are supposed to be even better than the old ones.
