The catalytic converter is what is expensive, no way around it. If you want cheap, get cattless.

Having a MB with plastic covers bolted over the exhaust system to deter thieves to move on to easier targets is a good start.

Other than that...yeah, you're pretty much at their mercy. A small comprehensive insurance deductible would help.
