My CPO 2020 E450 Thread

Let me start by stating that I am a newbie to this forum, but not new to MB. I have owned a 2013 SLK350 for about 7 years, purchased as CPO with only 1900 miles from MB of Tysons Corner, VA.

This thread is to document the mods planned (or unplanned) for the new acquisition, a CPO 2020 E450.

Let me start with a few Q&As:

1) Why an E-class? Bcos it is same size as our current 535xi, as we will use as a family sedan
2) Why the 450? Bcos it fits us best - balancing speed/power, refinement, luxury and sport within the model options. Besides all our cars are 300hp or higher
3) Why pfl? Preference over the new styling, which hasn’t grown on me… yet… I find the pfl more muscular and a better look… hope it doesn’t offend any fl owner.
4) Why MY2020? Frankly it is the only year that interests me as the last model year before the refresh, which means MB has had a long time to perfect all the features on this MY.

Now let’s get to it.

2020 E450 4MATIC
VIN: WDDZF6JB8LA722524
production date: 08-15-2019
retail date: 09-24-2019
12,811 miles, CPO
Original MSRP: $80,785 (incl destination & dewlivery)
Purchase price: $53,050
purchase date: 12-30-2022
Selling dealership: MB of Coral Gables, FL

Car to be picked up 01-09 for delivery to Maryland by 01-14-2023… can’t wait. In the interim, I can share some dealer pics of the car.

2) E53 AMG diffuser and tips, ordered from autunik.com

Awesome build and mods. That car looks gorgeous! Well done, sir.

I have bookmarked your build thread and it does have some inspirational stuff I’d consider… thanks for sharing. My E53 rear diffuser from autunik says arriving late Feb from Hong Kong. Sucks but I gotta be patient. My panamericana grille did arrive already, and I am thinking to either wait for the diffuser install or just go right ahead with the grille install… hmmm….

So here are my immediate “To-Dos”…

1- Panamericana grille (ordered and delivered)
2- E53 diffuser and tips (ordered)
3- 3M satin black vinyl wraps on front and rear spoilers (ordered)
4- matte black rear emblems - MB star, E450 and 4MATIC (ordered)
5- satin wraps on chrome window trims (ordered)

Next list
6- roof wrap in satin black vinyl
7- piano black wraps on all wood trims - console, dash vents, and door panels (stock is natural wood ash brown - the missus is no fan, so it’s gonna go)
8- front splitter and bumper flaps in satin or gloss black
9- LED door MB emblem on all 4 doors…
10- painted calipers (between copper and orange or a coppery-yellow mix…)

pics to come as these get added on… stay tuned.

2018 S560 and 2019 E450 Wagon.
Maybe a tune on the car tooo so it’s as fast as it looks. eurocharged makes a decent tune for the e450s
Quite the difference in power. 362 hp stock and 480 hp tuned. Who needs a amg lol.

That sounds sweeettttt! Salivating at that prospect. I reached out to Eurocharged for possible tune on my R172 350 with the N/A V6 (M276) and they said nope! MB squeezed all the juice out of that 3.5L motor to get it to 302bhp and not much can be gained with a “tune”. So if they can get an extra 100bhp on the 450… oohhhh! I am assuming it will require a down pipe to get out that much power.

will check it out. Time to do a forum search for those who have this tune on to find out more about it.

Thanks for the suggestion. It’s now added to the To-Do list.

My car arrived from Florida a couple weeks ago now and I did notice some slight vibration while braking, which made me do a more thorough check of the brake system. Lo and behold, what had escaped my focus came back to focus... the rust on the rear calipers were significant (IMO) and rust around the rotors and the drilled vents on the rotors. Of course, I started looking into this first by searching this forum if similar issues have been found on the W213s... found only one thread with some similar story line. I called the selling dealership in FL and sent them pictures... attached here as well...I asked them to explain how the CPO failed to record these rusted parts in the tech report, yet it somehow "passed CPO" inspection.

Today I got a call back from the dealership, asking for a local MB dealership I plan to use for servicing the new E. They then called back to say I should setup an appointment with the dealership and let them know date of the service so they can reach out to the dealership a couple days before my service to work things out.

I am not sure what to expect, but what I want is a complete replacement of the front and rear rotors, the two rear calipers and all brake pads. That will be my ideal resolution... however not sure MB dealership will agree to do this.

Any suggestion on how I can make my case to achieve my desired outcome? Am I unreasonable in this and should expect the worst case?

Turbos get a lot from a tune, as opposed to NA. That 480 is without downpipes.

Sounds like the dealerships should be able to handle it. Not quite sure on the caliper rust but I'd imagine its just warped rotors.

Appointment with dealership setup for next week. Fingers crossed.

Looked into Eurocharged and found a local shop in Beltsville, MD that can do this. Cost is $1300. Just gonna wait till all the exterior mods are completed before getting a tune.

Oh, the door puddle LED lights got added last night.

Nice! Did you go with M-B parts for the puddle lights or 3rd party parts?

3rd party for sure. I go cheap where necessary (4x puddle lights @$20; purchased 2 sets) and splurge when I can (Air fragrance balance replacement bottle for $70, yikes!)

Update on my brake system rust issues.

Took the car to my local MB shop yesterday, The SA agreed with me the rusts on the rotors were not normal, found the front rotors warped and car needs new front and rear rotors and pads. I then asked how about the rusted rear calipers. First he tells me it’s normal rust, to which I called BS, and told him they both need replacement. My car has 13k miles and unless it was sitting in water-logged driveway or drives mostly on salty roads or a combo of these, these rusts are not normal. He agreed but feel the selling dealership may not pony up the cost to replace the calipers.

Today I got a call from my local shop. They are working to help out the selling dealership in covering all the work. By tomorrow they should have approval on the shared costs between both dealerships and get all repairs done - front rotors and pads, rear rotors and pads, and two new rear calipers…

I will have more update once the work is completed. For now I am happy something is being done and looks like all my ask will be addressed.

Happy camper, for sure… if everything goes well, my car is due back Friday…

Update #2:

After some uncomfortable radio silence from my SA,, I decided to drive down to the dealership today. Good thing I did. My SA did absolutely nothing about getting my issue resolved all day and had left by the time I arrived. But this turned out to be a good thing bcos I got to escalate up the chain to the Sr. Service Director, who immediately took on the issue, called his counterpart in Florida and received approval to do all the repairs as quoted.

So I am getting new front rotors and pads, new rear rotors and pads, and new rear calipers.

Car to be ready for pickup on Monday. Now I am finally happy.

Meanwhile, I am slowly collecting bits n pieces of stuff going on the car. The biggest and most important is still due in another month or so.... the E53 diffuser and tips.

Caliper color I am going for (burnt bronze / orange)

Complement with this orange hub cap (already ordered)

Spacers (12 mm front; 15mm rear) ordered for current stock 19" AMG rims (ordered)

Matte black emblems to complement matte black vinyl wrap on lip spoiler (ordered & received)

MB emblems in matte black

Update #3:

Not the one I was hoping to give, but one that is germane. Turns out the clips holding down the rear calipers will need to come from Germany, hence the replacement for the rear calipers will take another 7-10 days.

So how did we get here... Last week Friday, the Sr. Service Director said all parts were in and to be safe, allow them to get everything done over the weekend (they open 7-days/week) and have the car ready for pickup Monday. On Monday, I got a call that the car will not be ready until Tuesday. On Tuesday I got a call that it is now scheduled to be ready Wednesday... Today is Wednesday and, yes... another call claiming it will take another 7-10 days.

So I am going in to get my car today and will bring it back in for the rear calipers when the parts are in.

To say I am disappointed with this dealership will be an understatement... I'll leave it at that.

Picked up the car late last night and took a couple pictures while in the dealership service bay of the new rotors - looks pretty good. The car finally drove awesome with no fade, wobble or pulse when braking. Pretty happy with the outcome. Just gonna wait for the new rear calipers whenever the part arrives from Germany...

Before - front rotors

With new rotors - front

Rear calipers - pending new ones

I went through a similar situation where all 4 rotors had to be replaced. They only covered 2 on warranty and I was out of pocket on the other 2

Nice thread. Does this car have the 3.0TT V6 or 3.0 inline 6 with 48V system?

It’s a 2020 so has the 3.0L V6 TT. I am good for now but likely going to add a tune (Eurocharged) down the line.
