Ambient lighting - has to be manually switched on every time I drive the car

I've recently took delivery of a 2017 Mercedes E220 Estate (W213), which features the interior ambient lighting - something I didn't have on my previous B-Class (W246).

I've been driving my E-Class now for just under a week and I have noticed the ambient lighting works fine, however, you have to manually go in to the car settings > Lighting > and then either adjust brightness or adjust the colour for the ambient lighting to actually come on. Is this standard, or should the ambient lighting switch on automatically as soon as the doors are unlocked? I've been through the lighting settings but cannot seem to find a way to set it, so that the ambient lighting switches on upon unlock. I've also checked the manual and it doesn't mention this, it just explains how to change the colour and brightness.

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Make sure that you have turned on "welcome lighting" in the ambient lighting settings.

I don’t see any ambient lighting settings that allow me to do this? The only ambient light options I have are these :

Do you have an ambient lighting menu that is not for color? Here is what my menu looks like on a '18 E300.

No I don’t have this menu, but your computer system and screen do look different to mine so maybe that’s why. Yours is the newer model so probably has a more up to date system

I have never seen a W213 with a infotainment screen that uses the smaller screen. It looks like the older NGT5.0/.1/.2/.5. I drove a 2016 E400 with a similar screen as yours, different set up compared to a 2015. I thought they all came with the 12.3" info screen with the analog speedo or upgraded with dual 12.3" speedo/info.

It most likely has to do with that style's MB head unit. FYI, I never had to turn on once I set it on or auto in either the W212 or W213 with the older gen giving 3 color choices or newer 12/64 color.

I suspect this as well. Go into your system settings and take a pic so we can see what NTG version it is maybe? Definitely 5.0 or lower I'm guessing.

Maybe this is common in models and model years with this version or less? Have you compared against others' equivalent models and MY?

No, the smaller screen may offer less features but any screen should remember all settings that it has. Only exceptions are the emissions related car settings, transmission, start/stop etc. that default to the low emissions mode.

Something wrong with this car. Either a broken control unit or incompatible SW versions on different control units that don't talk to each other properly.

I agree, but that screen does not belong in a W213. At least all the W213 in the USA I've seen, all come with the 12.3" center screen. So its probably incompatible with the car since it was born with a 12.3 and it got replaced/swapped out for this unit.

The OP might come from Europe (no location mentioned in the profile). That instrument cluster is typical for low end models of a W213, could be original from the factory for that car.
