Windshield Replacement

The winshield on my E300 was replaced this moning after an encounter with a thrown rock.
I'm now waiting for a system calibration. Exactly what is a system calibration?

I had my window replaced last month for the same reason. I specifically had asked for an OEM window but when I initially arrived I was told that I would be getting an aftermarket windshield. I refused. 2 days later my insurance company called and said they didn't realize that my car had the adaptive cruise self driving cameras and they would now approve an OEM windshield. I went for a second time and they installed an OEM. Meanwhile it appears there are too many rocks on the road. I've just reached 30k on my W213 and this is my 2nd replacement windshield.

I have IR blocking windshield. I got a MB supplied winshield complete with the Carl Benz signature.
The whole process including calibration took about an hour in my garage. The company was Glass America.

I’m in the same boat with my s class. Thinking about using glass America too. Were they able to do the calibration in your garage too? There’s a glass America down the road from me and if necessary I’ll just drop the car off there

I didn't choose Glass America, State Farm did. I was pleased with their work and timelyness. Calibration was done in my garage. That part took less than 5 minutes. The work was fully paid by State Farm with zero deductible.

I wonder how they can do calibration at your garage. When I had my windshield replaced last year, I went to the dealership to get it done and State Farm paid for 80% of it. I saw that I could go to glass repair shops like Safelite but apparently you then have to bring the car to the dealership afterwards to get the calibration .

Anyway, I have another crack now but I'm dreading going through the process. Also it annoyed me that the signature is different. Not sure why MB creates so many different signature stickers.

Safelite did the calibration at their shop for my car. They said that it takes 35-65 minutes. I wasn't sure because I was on a tight schedule so I came and picked up my vehicle the next day.

Ya, I'm kinda putting off doing the crack in my window until I get some other things squared away, seems like everything I get done these days is done wrong so I doubt the windshield will be any different.

The calibration was done with a tool that was a tripod mounted screen that was positioned about 1 meter in front of the vehicle. The person also had a computer attached to the OBD port.

it is called ADAS calibration..

if your car has the lane assist/active cruise (distronic in mb parlance)/speed limit sign reading... ADAS calibration has to take place after a windshield replacement.

System calibration ensures that all the driver assistance features—like lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and emergency braking—work correctly after the windshield replacement. Many of these systems rely on cameras and sensors mounted behind the windshield. When the glass is replaced, even a slight shift in camera angle can affect performance. Calibration realigns the cameras and sensors to the manufacturer’s specs so the systems function accurately and safely.

Anyone replaced their windshield with aftermarket instead of OEM? I had to pay extra in my insurance premium for OEM replacement. My car is a 2017 MY and windshield has a lot of very fine imperfections more visible at night with lights on it. This is the 1st MB or any other vehicle I have ever owned that I see this issue, with. I’m wondering if aftermarket would be better or is that wishful thinking.

Cost of oem depends if it is acoustic glass, IR, etc. Doubt aftermarket is better, unless you feel cheaper is better. Make sure they are capable of calibration. May not be as hard. Glass comes in different hardness.

Understood and that’s my issue with the current OEM that came with the car, I think it’s too soft. Anyone have similar issues with a lot of small dings on their windshield? I had a good size ding and used a glass repair kit to repair it, prevented it from cracking.

I have OEM acoustic/IR glass all around. I have not had any issues with small imperfections, scratches, dings, etc.

For what those most cost, I would hope not and definitely OEM on replacement if ever needed.

Wonder if ceramic coating or windshield wrap will help. There is video of someone with a window shop in PA doing a full windshield restoration. Grinding it down. On YouTube. I would try that before spending big on a new one. Expertise auto glass in Elizabeth I believe. Have to be others around the country

Appreciated, thank. I’ll definitely look into that, l’m in NJ so would need to see. Maybe the same thing they use to do a front end clear wrap would work to help protecting it.

IIRC it cost me $50. In Florida insurance is required to cover windshield replacement when there is any defect (chip, crack, etc.) in the driver's line of sight.

Lots of videos on youtube, claiming you can do windshield scratch removal at home. I would want a professional to do it, and there are actually few that claim they can do it, outside of selling you the products you need to do it at home. This video is from a shop in PA, not sure of the name or if they still do it

My 2016 Jeep still has its original glass that refuses to crack despite three large rock divits all within a 6" radius. I might just pay the total replacement cost -- only a couple hundred for OEM glass because there's no driver assistance/calibration involved. My G's windshield split within 2 miles after a barely visible nick from a tiny rock hit it. $3400 for OEM glass after 6 weeks waiting for it to arrive.

I do a lot of highway driving and my windshield has a lot of nicks, specks and one small chip. Most windshield now a days is pretty soft, less stress cracks or something like that. If you are replacing with aftermarket, try to find a glass company that supply glass to Mercedes. I have done this in the pass and gotten good results, I did not have any fancy options on my windshield which make it much easier.
