Hello y’all! I am helping my grandparents find a W213 Wagon to replace their W212.
They very much like the regular ride height and the luxury package (hood ornament and different grill) which makes 2020 the last year they can own before they switched to the Cross Country equivalent.
I am wondering what y’all suggest to look for in terms of longevity, is an E400 or an E450 superior mechanically? Does either have engine or transmission problems not present in the other car? Are there any options to avoid?
I am also interested in y’all’s thoughts on how it compares to the V90 Volvo of a similar year.
Just over two years of ownership on our 2019 E450 4matic wagon. Bought it CPO at age 18 months, and with but 3,000 miles on the odometer. Been bullet proof since we bought it, now has just over 30,000 miles. Driven Tennessee to Wisconsin twice, Tennessee to central Florida twice, to Texas, to Alabama, and to Vicksburg MS. Put on new tires at 24,000 miles, other than that it has just been normal maintenance and a most enjoyable driver. We get about 22 mpg around town, and between 30 mpg and 32 mpg on the interstate / back roads of America. Heading out with it in April for a bit of Route 66 discovery. This is our third E class wagon in our 30+ years of marriage, and while we have owned other vehicles, the marriage of practicality, efficiency and drive-ability with the E class wagon is in a league of it's own. We have 18" wheels and the AMG 'looks' package. Love the car.

The E400 and E450 from 2017-2020 have the same engine just in a different state of tune. It's both the M276 DE30LA, just the E400 makes 329hp 354 lb ft and the E450 362hp and 239 lb ft. But it's just turning up the boost. This engine from what I've heard is very reliable. My 2014 S212 has the same engine but 3.5 liters and without turbochargers, as did all 2012-2016 W212s. M276 DE35. I've had absolutely no issues with it.
The E450 didn't get a new engine until the 2021 facelift and all terrain makeover (M256 E30 DEH LA) which is a single turbo inline six instead of a naturally aspirated or biturbo V6. From what I've heard, aside from potential 48volt battery issues, it's also an extremely reliable engine. So I'd say, in terms of engine and transmission, any 2012 or newer should be great.
