what is the group and cold cranking amps of the 12v starter battery on my 2019 E450

So this morning I got an alert on my phone through the Mercedes Me Connect app that my battery had discharged. AAA came out and tested the battery as discharged and bad. Normally I'd check the current battery for group number and CCA and order the Optima Red Top that fits. All that said when you either look up online or on the battery that basic info seems tough to find. Can anyone assist with this basic info. Thanks.

You can look at the battery in your car and read the label. It's probably a H6 or H8 AGM battery.

I did and neither myself nor the mechanics with me could find any markings.
All that said I ended up with an Interstate AGM H7 850 CCA. Came with a two year warranty and five year prorated trade in. Not Optima but there none around for 50 miles.

My understanding is that the Mb branded battery is this Varta F21 at 800CCA and 80Ah capacity.

Battery Group Number

If your car is an E300 the battery is a group H6 or if it’s an E450 it’s a Group H8.

Just to add to this, my 2018 E43 came from the factory with a H6 and I replaced it with another H6, however there is a removable spacer in the battery tray that's stamped with "Remove for H8" (or something similar), so either one will work for my model at least.

I went with the H6 because it's about 10-12 lbs lighter.

Ditto: My E450 has the original H6 battery. Still good. When time comes to replace I will go with either H6 or H8, whichever is available.

I have found that Walmart has the cheapest price and best guarantee.

It's easy enough to measure the physical size of your battery and compare your dimensions with H6 and H8 sizes that can be found online.

Here are the dimensions:
  • H6: 11 X 6.94 X 7.5
  • H7: 12.44 X 6.94 X 7.5
  • H8: 13.93 X 6.94 X 7.5
Hope this helps

Or, just try to lift it. If you can't, it's an H8 (lol).

My 2017 has the original battery. I asked my dealer when I need new one. They said theses can go 10 years and seen them go longer.

I finally replaced the H8 battery in my W211. Made it about 16.5 years. Threw it on a charger and the most I could get out of it was about 12.2 volts so it had about 60% of capacity left. It was probably gone a year or two ago. Still have the original H6 battery in my W212, that one is about 13 years old. The Varta batteries had the date code stamped on the post. You can get them load tested to see how much capacity is left, if below 80%, should replace or throw it on a charger and check the state of charge chart to see the maximum voltage you get after it's fully charged.

Mine is now 5 1/2 years. Each time I do my oil change I have it tested. So far so good.

I also do a battery charge each spring and fall.

Battery life is unpredictable, absent extreme conditions such as temperature or deep discharging. I have an 11 year old Optima red top in my Jeep still going strong. I had an Optima yellow top (purportedly a better battery) in my Lexus, and it developed a shorted cell 2 weeks before its 3 year warranty expiry (the car's OE battery lasted 8 years). I replaced my G550's battery at 42 months when it went flat in response to single digit temperature. Periodic testing is a good practice, but not entirely dependable. All that's for certain is your battery will die at the most inopportune time and place.
