E400 exhaust leak at flex pipes - what options are there?

E400 exhaust leak at flex pipes - what options are there?
I've been smelling exhaust fumes when my window is down and when the the hood is popped up with the engine running. Occasionally even when inside with windows up, coming through the HVAC I guess. Hearing some ticks but hard for these old ears to distinguish between normal direct injection clicks and something that shouldn't be there.
Yesterday I had the vehicle on jack stands and was able to actually get under it. I discovered that the flex pipes just aft the catalytic converters are both leaking. I could feel a pulse of exhaust gases escaping with each combustion event on that bank of cylinders.
So.....what is available to remedy this? The flex pipes are oval, not round. That doesn't seem to be easy to source a replacement to have welded on.
Aftermarket catback I'm worried would be too loud.
A new system from MB seems to be ~$2k.
Anyone dealt with this before and found a solution that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?
