E300
e350 engine

i now have a 2017 E300 with 50,000 miles. This engine, along with some E350s in recent years, have occaisonally suffered a problem with a piston dropping into the engine and destroying it. I’m not an expert so my description may not be technically correct. Does anyone know if this has been corected for the 2024 model or whether it’s still a potential issue?

It is too early to tell as the W214 four cylinder E 350 uses the M254 engine which first revealed sometime in 2020 I believe but only started being used in 2021-2022 on a W206 C 300. That said, it might had been used earlier in other models in other markets but not in North America.

M274 on the other hand was first revealed (if I recalled correctly in 2011) and the first C-Class that used it was the 2015 C 300 (if I recalled correctly), the W213 E 300 also used the same engine.

The main cause (from what I read) of the problems with cracked cylinders in the M274 engine that the 2017 E 300 has are:

A: 2015 C 300, wrist pin issue

B: M274 in general who suffered cracked pistons may be caused by a combination of: bad fuel, neglect/poor maintenance, Low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI), etc.

Today’s car uses the M254 which is descended from M264 and M274. All engines have bad genes. The failures reported in this site are not from user neglect or bad fuel.

Avoid all MB 4-bangers. Buy a different brand if you require a new, non-preowned, car. All current MB powertrains are suspect and are objectively unreliable.

not bashing MB purposely just stating my experience but the B48 four cylinder mated with the ZF transmission in the 330i LCI I had an opportunity to try was almost like a dream
