Summer tires question

My 2025 e450 came with summer tires. I would like to know if it’s ok to drive on these in the winter? What can I expect if anything? I’m in NY.
I tried to get them to swap the tires for me but they wouldn’t do it. I don’t want to buy all season tires because I have no where to store these tires.
thanks.

This question has been asked before and I am sure others will chime in. Absolutely do not drive your summer set in the winter. Temperatures typically below 40-45°F degrees will affect the performance on top of your stopping power and handling load. Even driving 15mph in these conditions can lead to a serious accident that can be avoided by equipping the proper tires. Don't forget on top of all this it will lead to cracked tires as the elasticity in the cold weather will make them crack. I am in the same boat as you as I reside in NY and my 24 came with the Perilli Summers, I had them swapped at the dealer when I was in for an appointment in early November for the Michelin Pilot Sport AS/4 as I do not need a winter set and do not want to swap out of these for another 2-3 years (only summer seasons for summer tires here) the AS/4 have been amazing even with our last two snow-falls here in the city. Many different factors vary per individual when selecting the right tire, If I were you I'd research what tires will fit best with your daily driving, All seasons, All-weather, and Winters based on your habits and weather conditions, and go from there.

thanks for detailed reply. When you say swapped, did you trade your old tires in for the new ones or
Just purchased an additional set? What can I expect to pay for the new tires? I guess I could sell the summer tires, I only have 200 miles on them.

I purchased the additional set directly from mbtires and selected my local dealer which installed, rotated, and aligned it during my scheduled appointment. The dealer will offer you "tire disposal" However I took my summer tires back home with me as they were brand new with barely 400 miles on them. There are a bunch of tire suppliers both online and in person. I went with Mercedes Benz tires over Costco as an example in my case or any other supplier mainly for the convenience sake of having my dealer 2 miles from my house and my local Costco shop has been riddled with nothing but complaints about scratched rims during swaps which I did not want to risk happening.

You can view the correct tires required for your vehicle as well as have them placed on order at your local dealer with MB 24mo road hazard warranty at:

Using the MB tire site, remember to cross shop all the nearby dealers since each one sets their own price and your preferred dealer will most likely price match. Also ask if your dealer stores your summer tires for a fee.

I’ve got to be doing something wrong because they’re only showing 3 sets of tires for my car (20”) all of which are summer tires.

this is what would fit your car. Select what you like and then contact either your dealer or a parts store.

I am a Costco member: All season RF tires, with 5 year road hazard are less than $1500 for 4 tires. My tire size is 245X45X18

With only 400 miles on your car, why did you do an alignment?

I have almost 50K miles on my 2019 E450. I have replaced the RF Pirelli Centurato 7 with the same OEM Pirelli RF P7. Tire wear has been even. Car drives perfectly straight. Never have had or needed an alignment.

I have used Costco: I like their no quibble 5 year road hazard: with RF, I had to change my tires well before tread life was gone due to bubbles. With Costco if I get a bubble within 5 years, they are covered by the road hazard warranty.

As already said, it's very dangerous to drive on summer tires when the temps are consistently below 45°F. The tire compound for sumer tires will have very poor traction in those temps which will affect stopping an cornering to where it will be dangerous. Either don't drive or change them out. I had the same issue even being in Tennessee. It can get into the 20's and sometimes even lower, but will also hit 50's during winter. I swapped them out for Pirelli Cinturato WeatherActive. I have 20" wheels and was able to easily find the exact same size tires from what was installed at the factory (Pirelli PZero). Fortunately for me, I have space to store the summer tires. I kept them and will swap them back in April. It was around $1250 for the new tires mounted out the door.

that price doesn’t sound bad at all. For some reason when checking the link someone else posted for tires it only showed 3 results of tires all which were summer tires. I could just call dealer I guess.

I went to Discount Tire. Ordered the tires on their online system, scheduled an appointment, and had them done in 1 hour while I waited. I didn't get the hazard protection and they refunded the disposal fee since I kept the original tires. Had my son come with me in a SUV so I could take the tires home. Not sure if they would fit in the car. I would never use the dealership for tires. A dedicated tire shop does 20x more tires per day and the prices are lower than a dealership.

BTW, the price I said before was from memory. I looked it up and it was actually $1298.80 total minus the cash refund for disposal which was something like $20 for all 4 tires.

Several times a year mbusa tires runs a promo where the 4th tire is a dollar. That's usually when the tires thru MB are cheaper plus you get a loaner. Otherwise, like you, I prefer Discount Tire. I have never had a bad experience with them.

Long story short the dealership messed up when working on my car (something minor due to an inexperienced tech) but still an inconvenience as it took an additional 3 days to repair/fix. They included the alignment for free when I arrived to pick up the car with a small gift from the dealer so I didn't even bother asking why one was needed in the first place as I was too tired that night and just wanted to go home.

I have been running my Summer tires through winter in FL without any problem. Mine came with the Continental EcoContact 6Q and they have been fine in 50F (~10C) in the most recent cold fronts.

Everyone here already gave good advice and given than you live in NY, I would follow suit and swap to Winter tires. Strictly speaking though, the temperature of the tire is what matters. If you can keep the heat in your tires above 50-60F, you can run your summer tires in the cold weather as long as the roads are dry and there is no snow or ice. The moment either of those conditions exist, summer tires will not have any grip and are downright dangerous.

The general no summer tires below 45F advice that you get is because at those conditions, it's very likely you have frost or snow on the road.

It’s weird that mb even puts summer only tires on their cars. I live in Fla so it’s not a problem unless I want to drive the car up north. Guess I’ll be flying next trip up north. Woulda been simpler if mb just equipped the car with all seasons.

IMO all season tires are noisier than summer tires. MB used to only come with all season tires. The dealer would change them to summer tires before I would take delivery.

On my 2025 E450 I put on Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus (All Season). Great tires.
I'm in Toronto and summer tires would get me nowhere.
The dealer wouldn't do an exchange so I guess I'll have to somehow get rid of the summers.
