If you hit that little gear icon on the right, you can change what the one button at the very bottom of the screen does. It's currently set to A/C, but you can set it to be recirculation which makes it easier to hit quickly without having to go to the menu.

You are not an idiot. The folks that write software to make things complicated or remove buttons are the idiots. Don't blame yourself for stuff that they do.
Here's a tip: You can say, "Hey Mercedes, recirculate air", or "Hey Mercedes, turn on air recirculation", or almost anything like that to get recirculation or almost anything else you want the car to do without fiddling with screens. That's where the software writers have improved in that the Hey Mercedes option works quite well for a wide variety of things you want the car to do. Hey Mercedes understands better now when one uses natural language, so one does not need to remember set phrases to accomplish things in the car.
