The Avalon (is it still around?) had far more interior space than either the ES or its twin, the Camry.

Is I posted above, the Lexus ES twin was the Avalon, a stretched Camry, not the Camry.

It is certainly possible, that a few generations after the Avalon was introduced, they decided to stretch the ES into a size between the Avalon and the Camry, even though the Avalon is still larger than either of these near-identical platform mates.
