E53 Drive System Malfunction

Looks like my new E53 is off to a great start. After only 2000 miles I have the dreaded “Do not restart vehicle service required” error message. I was sitting parked when it randomly popped up. Hopefully it’s simply a software glitch that is fixed with an update and not some electrical gremlin they’re going to need to chase down.

Mercedes Roadside is towing it to the dealership for them to look at it as roadside told me not to drive it.

Has anyone else seen this issue before?

Service department said it’s some sort of coolant control module that isn’t communicating correctly. They can’t really do anything until they hear back from Mercedes unfortunately.

Yep the coolant is good. Apparently the cooling system used for the EV / hybrid components has some sort of control module that’s not behaving properly. They didn’t give me much information beyond that.

I see guess they haven't tell you if it is a hardware issue or software?

By any chance did you notice that the EL drive mode was dimmed? That was one of my symptoms when I got my error. It would not start, but I could switch drive modes and noticed EL looked different (dimmed). I wonder if my battery coolant sensors were unhappy and prevented me from driving to avoid potential thermal issues.

That’s interesting, my EL drive mode wasn’t dimmed. It actually was able to be driven up onto the tow truck in electric mode despite the warnings that the vehicle couldn’t be restarted.

Did you need any parts replaced on your vehicle or was it just a software update?

The dealer told me a few other W214 owners experienced the same error. They left the car, waited 10-20 minutes, came back and it was all fine, and there wasn't even a warning in the Service menu. Like it had never happened. I returned about an hour later (I was working) and it was all fine. No errors. No software updates in between. No parts replaced. Hasn't happened again, but that doesn't give me confidence.

I was updated by the service dept. this morning and they were advised by Mercedes to swap out some sort of heater unit. Hopefully this is the end of the issue after they get this new part installed.

Picked the car up and all the issues have been resolved. I got a copy of the technical notes and I’ll post them below in case anyone else has a similar future in the issue.

Codes:P01892 Climate control: Electric heater booster A for the coolant has an electrical fault or open circuit.

B10BC11 PTC heater booster "High voltage" has a malfunction. There is a short circuit to ground.

B10BC49 PTC heater booster "High voltage" has a malfunction. There is an internal electrical fault.

Parts:
MB214-835-02-00 PTC Water Heater

Repair:
Removed front left wheel and fender liner to obtain access to PTC heater, powered down HV system, clamped coolant lines, replaced heater. Powered up HV with SDS. Bleed coolant circuit. Cleared codes.

The MSRP for the 214-835-02-00 PTC Water Heater is $1400. So the total repair is probably close to $3K if not under warranty.
