2025 Mercedes-AMG E53 4MATIC+ – 6 Months In: A Bond Car in Obsidian

After six months and nearly 5,000 miles, my 2025 AMG E53 4MATIC+ has settled into something far more than a daily driver. It’s become a companion — fluid in traffic, electric in silence, and lethal on command. It’s the kind of car you get attached to. The kind of machine that transforms errands into experiences.

Ride Quality: The Bloom Is Real

When I first took delivery, the ride felt stiff — especially with the 21” AMG forged wheels and AMG Ride Control steel spring suspension. I worried it might’ve been too aggressive for a daily. But like a good pair of shoes, the setup needed to break in. The springs softened, the damping calibrated, and suddenly Comfort mode became what it promised: smooth, composed, and compliant.

Sport and Sport+ predictably firm things up, but it never crashes — just communicates. Some owners tweak tire pressure to address stiffness. I didn’t. I let it evolve, and it did.

Road Noise: Manageable, But It’s There

Even with the acoustic laminated glass, there’s a noticeable amount of tire noise from the 21s. It’s not intrusive, but it’s there. That said, it fades into the background once the Burmester 4D system is on. And that system? Absolutely stunning. Not “great for a car” — just plain great. The soundstage, depth, and spatial tuning are world-class.

AMG Performance Seats: Form Over Comfort

I have the AMG Performance Seats (DE5), and while I love their look and support, they aren’t perfect for everyone. As a bigger guy, I definitely feel some pressure from the fixed thigh bolsters. I understand the complaints. For performance driving, they’re flawless. For long hauls, they’re tolerable — but a full day in them reminds you that comfort wasn’t their top priority.

MBUX + Superscreen: Deep but Not Always Friendly

The MBUX Superscreen Package (DA0) turns the cockpit into a digital lounge. But it’s not always intuitive. Digging through menus becomes second nature over time, but things like the Apple Music interface feel inconsistent. Sometimes I end up on pages I can’t retrace — or escape. But the native Nav is excellent, and I actually prefer it for daily use because of how well it integrates into the HUD, instrument cluster, and augmented video.

I do wish MBUX could ingest Waze hazard alerts natively. My workaround is to keep Waze running silently in the background via CarPlay so I still get verbal warnings while using MBUX visuals.

Superscreen: Cool, But Mostly for Show

I spec’d it for the look. It adds presence and symmetry to the dash, especially at night. But the passenger screen? Truthfully, no one uses it. Still — I wouldn’t spec the car without it. It’s part of the theater. It makes the cabin feel futuristic.

Interior: Subtle, Tight, and Beautiful

Inside, it’s Black Nappa Leather (851) over Black Open-Pore Ash Wood Trim — and that combo elevates everything. The wood is tactile, matte, and elegant. No gloss. No reflections. Just rich texture and confidence.

The cabin has a quiet strength. No creaks, no rattles, and no budget plastic anywhere. The Night Package Plus, ambient lighting, and full glass roof seal the experience. It feels like money — but not loud about it.

I do wish I had the red seatbelts and AMG ambient red theme tied to Sport+ for full theater. And I still don’t know which option booted out the diffuser kit, but I would’ve taken that in a heartbeat.

EV-Only Mode: Urban Stealth

Around town, I run errands in full Electric (EL) mode — and it’s smooth, silent, and tight. The rear-axle steering (201) is amazing for city maneuvering. The car glides like a ninja, pulling into small spots and sneaking through traffic in complete silence.

Sport & Sport+: A Dual Personality Car

When you switch into Sport or Sport+, the car’s true personality emerges. The AMG Dynamic Plus Package (DE6)unlocks Race Start, tightens the diff, and boosts throttle response. The hybrid boost fills in perfectly — especially at launch and on corner exit. It handles with precision and just enough attitude.

The only letdown? The exhaust is too muted. Even with switchable sound (339), it doesn’t growl like a proper AMG. It’s more GT than street brawler. A little more bark would go a long way.

Design: Tactical and Menacing

This car is black-on-black-on-black. 21” black forged wheels. Red calipers. Shadow trim. It looks mean. Subtle from a distance. Terrifying up close. It’s the visual equivalent of a whisper that sounds like a threat. No badges needed.

Service Experience: Uneventful (In a Good Way)

  1. Week 1: Check engine light. Dealer ran diagnostics — cleared itself, no fault. Probably just an early sensor cycle.
  2. 500-Mile Oil Change: With Techron in the tank. I wanted to flush out anything from break-in. Will do another around 5,000 miles.
  3. Software Update Attempt: Dealer couldn’t pull down NTG7 update — the OTA rollout is VIN-specific, and mine hasn’t hit the queue yet.

Otherwise: flawless. Zero issues.

Digital Extras + Mods

All OTA digital extras are live. Projections, HUD augmentation, and gesture triggers are working. I’ve got Mbito installed, and I’m waiting on support for full EU menu unlocks (especially red ambient and possibly diffuser retrofits).

Final Verdict

Zero regrets. Not even close.

This isn’t just a quick luxury hybrid. This is a platform. A fusion of ICE and EV where nothing feels tacked on. It moves like a single organism.

I don’t mind the extra weight from the battery. The transitions are smooth. The calibration is artful. Whether I’m gliding through traffic or hammering it in Sport+, it always feels controlled.

It’s confident. It’s complex. It’s quiet when it wants to be and shockingly capable when you provoke it.

It’s a Bond car — not just in design, but in demeanor. Subtle power. Hidden weapons. Clean lines. Obsidian black. It doesn’t shout. It moves in silence. And then it strikes.

I completely agree, I just passed 1000 miles and I'm always finding reason to go out and drive this fantastic machine. It was never on my shopping list but the dealer asked to take it for a drive and I immediately fell in love. Perfect daily.

thank you for your infirmations.
you write Mbito ? Does it works on WS214?
you mention gesture triggers ? What is it
i do not ave the same seats as yours, the basis Sport one only, with full electric set-up buttons on the doors, but nothing for the width: do you if Mbito allows it ?
thanks

No Mbito is not yet supported, I do have the product and have been in contact with them, they have assured me that support will be coming.

The MBUX Interior Assist uses a small 3‑D camera in the roof console to read simple hand and arm movements. Because it links gestures to the seat it sees you in, the feature works only when it detects your hand, helping you keep eyes on the road and reducing distraction.

The seats that I have installed have side bolsters that can be set for the individual via the MBUX screen - its a feature of that particular seat and wouldn't be available via Mbito for any other seat

Few Questions for E53 owner :
How many miles have you been getting when its inEV only mode ?
with sport mode, how many miles have you been able to achieve ? with full battery & full tank ~
Consider switching from EQE AMG to E53AMG ~ thanks in advance !!

Cool pic, but you can barely tell it's a Mercedes-Benz let alone an AMG. Way to tease a bunch of fellas on the MB board. 😉

I get between 30 and 50 miles (1.6 to 2.5 mpkWh) in EL mode depending upon the ambient temperature. One surprise for former EV owners is that EL mode does not work at all when the temperature drops below about 15F. I don't regret trading my EQS SUV for the E53 Hybrid especially now that the EA stations are so overcrowded.
