Summer time EL mode mpkWh better than expected
When I first took delivery of my E53 Hybrid in February, 2025 I noted that the Winter time mileage was about 1.6 mpkWh. Not very good compared to the 2.5 mpkWh I was averaging year-round in the EQS SUV (which is also not great compared to EV sedans). I attributed the relatively poor mpkWh in the E53 to usually driving in 4th gear for short local trips. For the last six months I drove mostly in Comfort mode where the car toggles between EV and ICE and the car is occasionally in higher gears.
This week I decided to check the Summer time mpkWh with temperatures around 80F. After four short trips totaling 135 miles I averaged 2.5 mpkWh. The lowest rading I saw was 2.1 and the best was 2.9. To be fair, the trip with 2.1 mpkWh included about an hour parked in the car with the A/C turned on.
EPA EV range is estimated at 42 miles. But in the Summer, it seems easy to get above 50 miles on the useable HV capacity. This translates to under $.08/mile or about half the cost of gas when charging at home with an L2 charger.
