Emergency Brake Assist Works

Coming home from picking my car up for service, I had to drive through some late rush hour traffic. We were doing 70mph and suddenly came to a dead stop. Just prior, I took my eyes off the road for a split second, but I had at least 100 feet distance in front of me when my car beeped to alert me. I hit the brakes hard and maybe a 10th later, the emergency brake assist engaged. The front end dropped quite a bit there was a brief chirp from the tires, but the car felt like it stopped almost instantly. My natural reaction is to look in my rearview to see if I am about to be hit from behind but luckily the pickup behind me was new and had good brakes too. Everything worked as I would have expected it to. It was actually quite amazing how fast it was able to provide assistance and stop the car. As quick as it engaged, it disengaged and I was in a normal braking scenario again. I had another event many months ago with the car engaging the emergency stop assist and the emergency steering assist with similar results. I'm sure I could have avoided an accident myself without any help but it was nice to get an assist.

Based on this and my previous experience, I have no doubt this car can and will prevent an accident. It's quite impressive to feel these systems engage both in how fast they react and how they react. They don't take your ability to control the vehicle away. They assist you and magnify your inputs. Some of this tech is really quite amazing.

I had a warning beep and triangle on the driver's screen yesterday while driving. At the time I thought it was due to a detected potential collision and it was warning me. I didn't have time to read the text on the screen before it disappeared, so not sure... but both wife and I thought that the warning was quite early since I did not have to brake hard due to the car stopping in front of us. I don't recall any assist in braking, but maybe there was a little -- certainly not what you describe with very aggressive braking.

Now I am wondering if it was "brake assist" but just helped a little since that was all that was needed... or was it "attention assist"... since... ummm... my eyes weren't actually looking forward at the car that was braking in front of me, but off to the side at another car driving a bit crazy when it all happened. Either way, very happy to be driving a car with these safety features.

Anyone had a warning from attention assist? The manual says:

Distraction detection

ATTENTION ASSIST can use the driver camera to detect when the driver takes their eyes off the road and is distracted as a result.
  • If the system detects driver distraction, the whiteATTENTION ASSIST Stay Alert!message appears after a few seconds and a warning tone sounds. If the driver does not return their gaze to the road, the message is displayed in yellow and a continuous warning tone sounds.
Not sure what the "white ..." message looks like on the drivers display, so not sure if that is what I saw. I just remember a triangle and a stout beep.

I've had the beep and no brake assist a couple of times. The warning is the precursor but it will not always intervene unless it determines it should. If it does, you will know it. It's an obvious intervention and it happens very fast and then it's back to normal.

I get that a lot if turning in a two turning lane with the blinker on. Once it reacted with aloud beep and the seatbelts ratcheted tight. Definitely got my attention.

Yes, this can happen when turning and the car sees a guardrail or sign between the divide as the stationary object. Usually when a false reading like this happens, you just get the beep and maybe some tension on the belts but it does not effect braking unless you continue toward that object. Ive had this happen with glare from the sun as well. Granted, mine is older tech, but it still works very well and has never stopped me when unwarranted.

I will get a beep too if I'm in the outside lane of two turning lanes but no seatbelt action. The car thinks I'm merging over into another vehicle but since I am not turning until the other car is also turning there is no collision detection, just a warning that a car is there.
