No digital key icon in app

The installed app on my android does not have a digital key icon. Going to MBUX>open/close/>digital key>setup starts and when I put my phone in the cradle it asks for a 8 digit code which I dont have and then fails. Is it possible the build doesn't have the option?

AFAIK the digital key does NOT work with Android devices.

Mr. ua549 is correct unless MB or Android software makes a change to allow for digital keys. Until then, know that the iPhone digital key works very well and I hope they find a way for it to work with Android-run phones as well. I find the digital key to be very convenient and I like using it.

Sadly true, this was discussed elsewhere as Android has way more variation than iphones so MB decided to simply not bother.

I know, that seems to be how MB made the decision.

Android apps will not work across all device platforms. That is the issue. To work the app would have to account for every platform. There are over 24,000 distinct Android devices produced by 1,300 different brands. produced by nearly 1,300 brands

That's not a requirement for Android apps. It may be the reason MB decided not to add support for Android, but there are apps that do not work on all Android phones. An example are tap to pay apps such as Google wallet that require NFC to work. Not all Android phones have NFC yet the apps exist and can even be installed, but only work fully on phones with NFC. Another example are the fitness apps that track steps. Not all Android phones have an accelerometer to support step counting without external hardware.

Even with the same hardware, apps may not work due to the software implementation.

That is true even for Apple phones. According to MB, Apple iPhone 11 and newer with iOS 16.4 and Apple Watch Series 6 are required for digital key. It's kind of a strange combination since iPhone 11 came out in September 2019 with IOS 13 while IOS 16.4 came out in March 2023. The key technology needed is Ultra Wideband or UWB. Samsung phones supported UWB since the S21 Plus released January 2021. Asking Google Gemini why MB only supports Apple provided the below results which are much more plausible than not all android phones supporting UWB. Keep in mind that Gemini is trained in part by what is on the Internet and therefore information in this and other customer car forums which are often littered with incorrect or bad information.

Reasons for focusing on Apple's technology
  • Existing Partnership:
Mercedes-Benz has a direct partnership with Apple, which facilitates the integration of their Digital Key into Apple Wallet on iPhones.
  • User Experience:
The integration with Apple Wallet allows for a seamless experience for iPhone users, who can access their car key with their device's passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID.
Reasons for not supporting Android Digital Key (initially or fully)
  • Control over Software:
Mercedes-Benz, like some other automakers such as General Motors, prefers to retain greater control over the vehicle's software and user experience, rather than making it dependent on external mobile platforms.
  • Reduced Dependency on External Systems:
By not adopting a full Android solution for the digital key, Mercedes-Benz can avoid being solely reliant on Android's development and potentially create a more proprietary and integrated system.
  • Liability Concerns:
Automakers often worry about liability issues if a third-party system, like Android's, fails or causes a bug that affects the vehicle's critical functions.
  • Strategic Decision for a Comprehensive Experience:
Mercedes-Benz aims to provide a more complete and consistent software experience within the vehicle's digital ecosystem, which requires deeper control than what a third-party integration might offer.

Update in Digital Key

After 1 hour on the phone with MB twice, here is the story they came up with. After escalating the case they came back and said that the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra was compatible with the digital key. Another hour and further escalation. They an email saying the reason it isn't working is because it doesn't work with a 2024 E450. But I have a 2025 E450. Their response but the car was built in 2024. Since delivery was in May of 2025, I doubt that is the case. MB is very nice on the phone but seems like MB support is on a downward slide. I will bring it up with the dealer.

The people on the phone are worse than pointless. You will do much better crowdsourcing help here.

The folks at MB support are clueless on issues such as this. The simple matter is that MB decided to not support Android phones with digital key yet. They may in the future but that is not confirmed as far as I have seen. There are zero technical reasons to not support Android as many upper end phones like Samsung are perfectly capable as has been discussed in this and other threads. If digital key is that important to you, get an iPhone. Otherwise, you will have to wait and see if they ever add Android support.

I also noticed that in Samsung Wallet on my Samsung S24 Ultra support Mercedes Digital Key, but adding a key brought me to the Mercedes app which doesn't have that entry at all. Another proof that MB software system sucks.
