AMG E53 - Charging Programs on Phone App

I've set my location on MBUX navigation to "home" and selected the "Home" charging program, based on location, in the car. However, when I check my Mercedes app (android), I notice the car charges in the
"Standard" program.

How do I get the car to recognize when I'm at home charging to use the "Home" program? It seems I have to move it manually via the app every time.

Same issue on my wife's 2026 GLC 350e.

Am I missing a step somewhere?

You are not missing anything. It's a UI fail.

Best you can get is a center screen pop-up notification to select 'home' charging program when you are approaching home.

No different with IOS.

Is this a known issue with MBUX? Weird that it hasn't been addressed in a software update ...

I think it is known that MBUX in these cars SUX if that is what you mean? You also cannot save preferences to a charging location (for instance fast charging only in 'standard', charging pauses only at 'home', etc.), nor can you program charging pauses by day or weekday/weekend. It is far from the set-it-and-forget-it interface that it should be.

I've had a complaint filed with MB on this for a while...they say it operates as it should, but at least they know it is an issue that really doesn't appear to work as it should.

Thanks for confirming. I'll make sure my dealer gets the same message.

Saving a charging program default and getting rid of the approval dialog to change to the home program when entering the home GPS zone, are very easy software fixes.

The charging pause option is buggy as well as lacking in functionality.

Does Mercedes have a website where owners can request enhancements to MBUX or the Mercedes app? If Mercedes creates a user suggestion website, the charging portion of MBUX and the app, which seems like it was dropped mid-development, would rise to the top of suggestions that owners want and are easy to implement.

No software company would respond to @yossarian1 's request by saying "It's operating as it should." In my experience, a software company would say, "That's a great idea. I'll share it with the engineers, but I don't know when it will be implemented." I had a bunch of requests to one software company get implemented over the last few months. A second software company has told me that the first step in one of my requests has been implemented and will be released to the public later this month.

Auto manufactures want the benefits of selling software, namely scalable development costs, minimal distribution costs and recurring revenue. BMW selling seat heater subscriptions isn't the way. Mercedes sent out a survey after I purchased the car. One of the questions on the survey was "When would it be acceptable for Mercedes to have a subscription service?" If the manufacturer's response to improvement suggestions is "Everything is working as it should" then there is no reason to pay for a subscription.

The traditional auto manufacturing process of designing a car for 5 years and making minimal changes after those five years is very different from software sales, where updates are sent to the public every two weeks, and sometimes quicker for bug fixes. Consumers are getting used to frequent updates to applications on their smart phones, tablets and computers. When very simple software requests are ignored by the auto manufacturers it just shows how they aren't meeting customers' expected pace of software improvement. As we are in the third year of the W214/S214, we shouldn't be seeing the charging program application half-completed. If Mercedes released the charging program software as it is now in 2023 and then completed the basic functionality in 2024, I would find that reasonable.

Auto manufacturers can't update vehicle software without a blessing from the NHTSA.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) plays a crucial role in evaluating vehicle software updates, particularly those that address safety-related defects and automated safety technologies. Key Responsibilities:
  • Safety Evaluation: NHTSA assesses whether software updates effectively mitigate unreasonable risks associated with vehicle safety.
  • Compliance with Standards: The agency ensures that updates comply with federal safety standards, which are essential for maintaining vehicle safety and performance.

Here is a screenshot of MB's response (sorry for the highlighted "Mercedes"...used the email search function):

Thought I might add this though slightly off topic. As far as I can understand, if you are thinking about installing a level 2 charger, you might want to get your electrical work for the outlet and purchase your charger by June 30, 2026, to be eligible for the Fed's tax credit.

It is basically a 30% tax credit on ALL of your costs, but the program ends for good on 06/30/26. I also think you must live in specific census areas which is explained on the website. Just thought I would help out those on the fence regarding upgrading to a level 2 system that at least you might get some of your costs back. But if you wait for July, you will not be eligible.

Another side note, check with your local electric company for rebates. I live in an area supplied by Duke Energy, and they have a rebate on just the wiring / outlet portion of the upgrade (as long as you meet their requirements on the install). Duke doesn't give any rebate on your charger purchase.
