Unhappy Retractable Door Handle issue

Hi all, I just purchased a 4 month old demonstrator 2024 EQE350 4matic SUV. This is my first electric vehicle, coming from a long line of petrol Mercedes-Benz.

I’ve only had it for a couple of weeks, but it went back to the dealer to have the Battery Management recall and N73 recall completed. After these were done, I think the door handles are behaving differently.

When I approach the vehicle (with key in pocket), the door handles automatically extend and light up. But then, if I walk away (without touching the door handles), I expect them to retract automatically. But they dont. They stay extended and lit up. Forever. I’ve even checked back an hour later, and they still remain extended and lit up. This doesnt seem like the correct behaviour to me. They will never retract or turn off the lights? This will attract unwanted attention at nighttime, or even drain some of the battery.

Can some nice forum members test and confirm? Walk up to the vehicle, let the door handle automatically extend. Then, without touching anything, just walk away (don’t unlock the vehicle). Ensure you walk 10-15 meters away from the vehicle (so the car doesnt detect the key again). Do your door handles remain extended and lit up? Or do they automatically retract?

When you walk away, ensure you are far away from the vehicle. I noticed if I stand close enough that the key is still detected, they will eventually retract.

Cheers! MB Aussie

Welcome!

They retract after 2 minutes. However, even if you approach from a garage or inside your home where the key can be detected, they pop out again. Is there a chance you're near the garage from inside the house? They'll pop out a few more times. Eventually, the car will stop popping them out, as it recognizes its being activated too many times. To test, put your keys on a night stand far away from the car, and then come back 10 minutes later. They should be retracte for sure.

Heya! Thanks for letting me know. Sounds like mine are broken then. I live in a high-rise building. After I approach the vehicle and they extend, I then went back to my apartment. I returned to the basement garage without the key, and they were still extended and lit up after an hour.

See below photo. All four handles extended and lit up, after an hour. Key left in apartment, nowhere near the vehicle. Back to the dealer…

That does seem like it glitched out. Even if the key was in the vicinity, as long as there is no movement (the key) for a few minutes it literally goes into standby and does not send any signals to the vehicle so even in that case it should retract. The key will only wake up again when you move it. This was implemented to counter keyless theft.

Yeah, that's definitely not normal behavior. Probably a simple reset/reboot will clear that. The good news is, the illuminated handles draw so little power, it won't really register as perceptible battery drain until you have it resolved. The DC-DC converter will top up the 12V from the HV battery from time to time, but even then it won't be noticeable. Good luck, let us know how that is resolved.
