Rear window exploded

My rear window exploded in my garage. Anyone know what could cause this? I thought the rear window is factory tinted so I doubt the dealership had tinted it. Could it be due to improper installation or a stress related fracture?

Most of the glass went in the trunk, but you do see some scattered on the floor.

Yikes! Anything with a small point impact can easily shatter it. Anything drop from the ceiling, such as a screw, or did a neighbor shoot a bb pellet at the car? So sorry to see that. First I've heard of that happening on an EQ.

I don’t mean to sound like a jerk and by means no disrespectful, but is it possible the wife or kids loaded something that might have made contact with the window? Obviously this would need the tailgate to be slammed shut instead of using the electronic closer.
Also, do you live somewhere with EXTREME temperature variations? This might be a possibility.
I say these things because it’s highly unlikely it was an installation issue. The only option, in my opinion of course, other than someone physically damaging it, is the glass production its self. Glass is actually quite difficult to manufacture correctly. A very small degree of temp change in the cooling or annealing process could lead to pent up stress that eventually will give way in a spectacular fashion, like exploding.

Yikes sorry to hear that OP, need to do analysis to determine if it was internal stress.

Wow! So sorry to see this, stealth.pilot!
This is the first I've seen or heard of something like this on an EQ (other than the panorama roof panels...)

I'm wondering if there could have been a concealed flaw/crack right where the wiper axle comes through the window. Or if somehow, an improperly mounted wiper unit was continually causing the wrong kind of stress on the window.

On an irrelevant note: Your garage door is very unusual. It's the only one I've ever seen with glass panels! It certainly makes for nice light in the garage while working on the car ;-)

No trunk was empty. The extreme temperature variations is a consideration. Most days it starts around 40 degrees and then hits 78 mid afternoon.

I love these garage doors. They not only provide a lot of light but they are maintenance free since they are made of anodized aluminum and double pane glass. They make a range of finishes. We went with the clear. It tends to look all black from outside, but transparent from inside.

Was rear window damaged when vehicle was transported on truck from Florida Dealership last year? Did you drive near one of those Storms on I-20 near Birmingham/Vance/Leeds with Hail or Tornadoes?

“When a cold car window is exposed to direct sunlight, it may expand too quickly and fracture. Auto glass may also shatter if, after an extended, extreme heat exposure, it's cooled down rapidly.”

I remember 13-years ago when Family first moved to Oconee County some rich bored farm kids tagged my rental car with paint guns on 53 headed west from Watkinsville…didn’t realize it until washed car next day.

Sorry for window ldamage on your 24-month Lease…

So you are saying any car's glass will react the same under these conditions?

The rear window was fully intact prior as far as I know. I have never driven the car in hail or tornadoes and it is always parks inside both at home and at my office.

Mercedes had no loaners available for next 2 weeks so I'm driving the Porsche daily now.

The rear glass is laminated, and it appears that your damage was in the middle section near the wiper motor. I wonder if that was the cause of the damage. Any new news on this?

Dealer refused to cover this under the warranty (which I assume means they didn't want to submit a warranty claim). I escalated this to Customer Service who agreed to cover the repair. Now I need the dealer to do the work. Car has been at the dealership since last Saturday and I dont have a loaner since they were all booked up.

It's interesting that the dealer didn't want to submit a claim. The window has heater elements on the surface, and the use of the heater element strips could have set the failure mode in the glass. I discussed the situation with my service manager, and while he's had a rear window shatter in the EQE SUV, he has seen where an SUV window has shattered due to the stress of the tailgate and the heater use in cold weather. BTW, I placed an order for the 2026 AMG EQEX4 for next year. There is supposed to be a battery upgrade for faster charging (semi-solid-state) and 800V instead of 400V. Also, some improvements in motor efficiencies and a redesigned heat pump.

Glad to hear it is a happy ending at the end. As for the loaner, sorry to hear that but I think you might be happy that you get more time with your Porsche : )

I am happy to be driving the Porsche more. Although I do feel like a bit of a pariah showing up in the Porsche every day at my son’s school for the pre-k carpool.

I see. Any chance they will have a loaner freed up sooner?

Yes got my loaner yesterday a week after dropping off the car, and expect to have my car back tomorrow.

glad MB was able to warranty that for you...I think more like a factory goodwill. Submitting a warranty at the dealership level should be very easy as long as it's coded correctly...and may also require a pre-authorization ticket number from MB HQ... but shouldn't be that much work

Yes it was a factory goodwill. Picked up my car today. Perfectly fixed, and looking like new. Very happy to be back behind the meal. My loaner was an EQE350 sedan. Quite nice and perfectly good loaner. A couple of days driving that made me appreciate my EQE AMG SUV even more.
