Key needs to be present right? I mean, if key not present does it still do that but won't let you unlock or does it not pop out at all?

I asked because being in the dealership showroom I assumed you didn't have the key, was confused, thanks!

If the key isn't present and the car is unlocked, the door handles pop out if you tap the middle. But if you don't have the key on you, they wouldn't automatically pop out because they have no way of knowing you're getting closer. They don't just sense incoming movement, otherwise they'd pop out for every blowing leaf or passing cat lol

This happened to me again the other day after car had been sitting in garage overnight. I stood in front of the car and shook keyfob vigorously but no door handles. Anywho, only happens intermittently so I dunno...

I think the issues about when/how the EQE door handles lock/unlock has much more to do with the car's operating system than the key-fob. Obviously the key-fob needs to be near the car in order to lock or unlock it, but after that I think the car's OS determines when/if the door handles pop out. It would be nice to understand the logic that MB uses for this unusual system..

Some fine tuning of the system is necessary. I was cleaning the car today and the doors locked either by me or automatically. The right read door handle was still popped out and lighted but would not open or respond to touches/swipe. A lock and unlock with the fog restored equilibrium. Not a concern, just amusing.

It's definitely affected by how many times you walk by the car without then reaching to unlock it. After a certain number of times, it assumes that you're not wanting it to extend, so they stay retracted. If, on the other hand, you park far away from where you happen to be, it'll always pop out, first time, every time.

One more unusual thing - if all the doors are locked and you rub the driver's side door handle to unlock it, as expected all the door handles pop out - but, for some strange reason, even though the passenger's side door handle has popped out, that door remains locked. Who knows what the logic associated with that is!
