2023 EQE 500 SUV electric and 2024 Jaguar F-PACE SVR 5.0L
I really think a large portion of my disappointment with my 500 SUV is due to these stoopid 21" AMG wheels. Not only are they about as comfortable as driving on rocks when combined with MOE run flat tires but they're killing my range. For example again, the base model FWD Prius with 17" rims gets 57 MPG while the next trim level up with 19" rims gets 53 MPG. In fact, you can add AWD to the base model and it still beats the mileage with stoopid ginormous rims at 54 MPG. Besides, my 500 isn't an AMG so who am I trying to fool? I feel like a poseur.

Big rims cause global warming. Can we outlaw them already so I can buy a high trim level car that gets decent mileage? Thanks!

My sympathies but you write with good humor. I spent a few decades at another car compay (I'm not an Engineer), and learned from Engineers the following saying: "Engineers hate big wheels. Designers love them." I heard many debates about what wheel sizes to offer on our vehicles. Large rotating mass directionally means less efficient acceleration, braking, and as a heavier vertical pendulum, more ride harshness as there is more mass to manage for jounce and rebound. With those lessons, I usually go for the smallest wheels possible, although with EQE I might take 20s as I wouldn't want the steering to get any "squishier" than I experienced on a test drive with 20s due to a taller sidewall. Need to check the specs. It might be worth seeing if your dealer has a demo with 19s already in service that he might be willing to swap with yours...used for used....or just buy a set from Tire Rack to make the upcoming years more comfortable to you.

Much like this forum there still no 500 SUV on the official MB website for wheels but it says these 18" rims fit the 500 sedan anyways:

I wouldn't rely on that. I don't know that the hubs/calipers are the same on that ICE S-Class as on the EQE/EQS family, given the disparity in vehicle weight. Given that OEMs outsource their wheels anyway, you can also look at high quality aftermarket such as BBS and others.

Some came with 19s so I figured 18s would probably clear the calipers too but you're right, you know what happens when you ***-u-me. I was more worried about the offset being right/wrong. 500 has rear-wheel steering so I'd hate to end up with any rubbing.

Not EQE SUV but Bjorn did a range test with EQS 580 SUV which also has 21" rims. I hate his 90 KMH test but if you watch last leg in video he drives for about two hours with avg around 87 which is close to 55 US MPH and gets 22.2 kWh/100km which is just a hair under 2.8 mipkwh

Like Sammy Hagar however, I absolutely cannot drive 55 and that 120 KMH number, which is ~75 MPH in US, really has me worried as my battery is 90 kWh vs the 107 Bjorn calculated. If I want to arrive with 10% and only charge to 90% so I'm not sitting there forever waiting that'll be more like 70 kWh usable.

I guess there's only one way to find out for sure so I'm going to attempt the 1000 mile (each way) trip in my stock EQE 500 SUV anyways. That'll give me some data to compare. So I'll have a better idea how much more/less efficient my EQE is verses an EQS and with/without smaller wheels when I eventually swap them out.

I wonder his heater is set on what temp, and which mode? comfort, eco, eco+?
because EQS suv does not have heat pump, most EQS driver suffers 30-40% range lost due to using extra energy on heater.
fortunately your EQE suv is the 1st EQ comes with heat pump and won't suffer on this during winter.

very easy for you to test how far you car drive your EQE, just charge your EQE to 80%, drive to the freeway about 10 miles, head back another 10 miles. see how much % of energy you use and that gives you better idea how many miles you can drive.
dont take the words from internet, everyone driving differently.

today I drove 15 miles to work and use 4% of battery, no AC (for reference consumption is 267). 15/4x100 so I will only consider 350 maximum range and that is from 100 to 0%. if for 80 I will do 280 miles.
you calculate your own miles this way. people said they do 300, 400, 500 those don't mean anything TBH. dont take it too seriously. just my .02

Unfortunatey I live in Texas so the heat pump doesn't get used much but yeah, it was 2 C when Bjorn performed his test so that's definitely a limiting factor. Ranges have varied so wildly on my test runs I really can't even guesstimate, there are just too many variables. I'd really like to eliminate rim size though and just use the smallest and most efficient ones I can fit to my vehicle.

I've gotten as low as 2.7 mipkWh and as high as 3.1 but that's driving mostly 55ish. I'm expecting that'll drop to ~2.4 mipkWh at 75 MPH. I'm thinking of waiting another month to make my trip so it'll cool down some and A/C won't be as big of a factor. It's hot as #$%^ in Texas right now!

I suspect this may have a lot to do with your low efficiency numbers! I'd bet you'll find over 3 mi/kWh when your temps get back to sane levels. The cooling system compressor is probably going full tilt to keep you and the drivetrain at comfortable levels.

My brain is wired for distance per unit of energy, as in miles per gallon or miles per kWh. Why EV manufacturers insist on using milliliters per 100 miles is beyond my comprehension.

In any case, since my last reset about 10 miles ago my average is over 400 but I had to punch it to pass a couple guys and spent a lot of time waiting at traffic lights, which the trip computer says uses 1999 kwh/100mi by the way.

on your phone app, or your car, there is one shows since from reset. it cumulates probably since you bought your car if you never reset it. what is the number?

BTW, those 18" rims definitely wont fit the SUV. Tire sizes are different between sedan and SUV and nobody sells 265/55 R18 tires which is what I'd need not to mess up speedo. And quite frankly just from measuring in my garage looks like 19" might not fit on the 500 either. The front calipers are actually quite large... and there's one hole drilled in each of the rotors which kinda freaked me out at first. Why not one slot too? LOL

Oh well, so much for optimizing my kilomilliliters per 100 miles. *sigh*

It still may be beneficial for ride comfort and efficiency to consider moving from 21” to 20” if your dealer’s parts department rules out 19”. Check the weight difference between those wheels.

Kyle from Out of Spec just did a range test with a RWD EQS 450+ SUV on 21" rims. Since my EQE 500 SUV has front motor disconnect in addition to a heat pump, I'm thinking my range should probably be similar, about 300 miles @ 65-70ish, since my battery is 20% smaller. He had A/C on but said he had it in eco1 not eco2 mode. I didn't even know eco had two settings but I guess I'll try that on my road trip too. So I'm going to go head and chance the 250 miles on back two lane highways and use the direct route. The way the EQS behaved at a low state of charge has given me some confidence that even if I cut it close I should be able to make it there. That'll save me over an hour of extra driving. Thanks Kyle!

Yup, just watched it as well. The EQS has a lower Cd than EQE, but the EQE has lower overall area, so maybe similar CdA. From our own road trip tests, these numbers hold up.

Tire width is another factor that affects drag. 20" OEM wheels come with skinnier tires than the 21" wheels.

On my EQE 500 the 21s are 265 mm but same rim on EQS 450 that Kyle is driving uses a 275mm tire I believe.

Yeah, that seems appropriate. The 19s are 255mm on my sedan, you can really feel the width going around corners. My W213 had 245s and they tended to break free more easily when cornering, despite lower weight. Perhaps the rear steering is helping that considerably. On Euro spec EQE sedans, tires are 235, or at least, I thought I saw that after searching. The width is essential to good cornering with as much weight as these cars have.

EQE 500
As an additional data point, I've got an EQE 500 sedan and just did a 30 mile round trip. Traffic was moderate which kept speeds lower but never came to a complete stop. It's been my best result ever at 274 Wh/mile. This is actually approaching my average in my Model 3!
