A dutch article (translated) about EQ sales in the US

Fri 7 Feb 2025
Mercedes ' electric models are not selling as well as the brand had hoped. In America in particular, things are currently doom and gloom. And so Mercedes is putting its EQ models on sale.
Mercedes’ U.S. EV sales are set to plummet in 2024. Electrek.co reports a significant 52 percent drop for the flagship Mercedes EQS . And the Mercedes EQE and Mercedes EQB are also seeing significant declines, down 39 percent and 36 percent respectively. So there’s work to be done.
High discounts
Mercedes does this by throwing around high discounts. Anyone in America who still fancies an EQS will now receive a discount of no less than 15,000 dollars, the equivalent of almost 14,500 euros. The EQE can be had for 10,000 dollars (more than 9600 euros) less and on the SUV version Mercedes is giving the equivalent of almost 7700 euros discount.
The very expensive Mercedes-Maybach models do not escape the scythe with which Mercedes goes through its American price lists. The 685 hp strong EQS SUV 680 can go with a discount of 10,500 dollars (more than 10,000 euros).
That still leaves a hefty amount, but still, if even the absolute top model of the EQ series can also be sold for less, something is really going on. That is why Mercedes is taking a different approach when it comes to its EQ models (see article below "Mercedes changes strategy").

Mercedes changes strategy: EQS in the trash and return of old familiar name
Fri 30 Aug 2024
Sometimes new is not better. In 2021, the Mercedes EQS came on the market as an electric version of the S-Class, but now Mercedes is back on this. The model is being thrown in the trash and the Germans are going back to the old and familiar.
The next generation of the Mercedes S-Class will arrive in 2030 and will be available with both a combustion engine and an electric drivetrain, Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius told Britain's Autocar . Both versions will have a similar design both outside and inside, the executive said.
That means the end of the Mercedes EQS after a life of around 9 years. Mercedes hopes to profit from the S-Class's rock-solid reputation by also launching the EV with that name.
Different platforms
Yet underneath they will be completely different cars: the electric variant will be based on the upcoming MB.EA Large platform. The version with combustion engine, on the other hand, will have a further development of the current MRA platform as a technical basis.
Changed course
It also means that Mercedes chooses to deliver the S-Class with a combustion engine for another generation. Earlier, the brand indicated that the petrol and diesel versions of the S-Class would be replaced by the second generation EQS - as a fully electric car.
It's one of the first signs of Mercedes' changing course. Three years ago, the Germans said that by 2025, around half of all sales would consist of plug-in hybrids or fully electric cars, and that by 2030, in countries "where the market would allow it," it would have a fully electric range in the showroom.
But the demand for electric cars is stagnating or not getting off the ground at all. As a result, Mercedes feels compelled to back down. Earlier this year, Källenius already told investors that Mercedes would continue to pump money into cars with a combustion engine. He also shared the expectation that by the end of this decade, about half of all Mercedes sold will have a plug-in hybrid or electric drivetrain. A significant weakening of the original plan.
