EQS SUV news and rumors

I can think of two reasons to have the bigger headlights as a designer.
Technically they may be able to cool the lights better with the bigger design.
Also look at the big bland nose of the model 3. Headlights help to fill that big blank space on the front.

Great article JoeMa, let's hope all the numbers are correct, 350 mile range, order early next year and release in late summer, and cost about 100K for base model. With about $7500 and perhaps more EV incentives, could bring it close to 100K with the most desired options (Distronic plus, panoramic roof, heads up display, multi contour seats, etc) and perhaps 110K or so with E-ABC (if still offered).

We currently own a 2019 BMW X7 which has been a very good SUV. Before the X7 we own three Mercedes SUV's. We did experience a few issues. Our first, a 2013 GL 550, had a serious flaw with the Distronic system that caused the vehicle to nearly shutdown unexpectedly, once while driving at highway speeds. So the dealership agreed to do a buy back and put us in a new 2014 GLS (first year of the new name). That GLS had some issues with warped brake calipers which the dealership replaced. Our last GLS 550 was a solid 2017 model that didn't give us any issues. We ordered a new GLE 450 to replace it in late 2018. After 6 months of waiting for it to come in we decided to look at the just released BMW X7 and fell in love. So we traded our 2017 GLS 550 on a 2019 BMW X7 50i. It is a more advanced vehicle with a lot more tech (digital dash, wireless CarPlay, etc.) Now we want to move on to an EV and the EQS SUV looks like it will be the cream of the crop. BMW started selling their new iX EV (about the size of the X5) in Europe and since we love our X7 so much we decided to preorder an iX to hedge our bets. At some point in the future BMW will contact us to place an actual order but it likely wouldn't be built until late next summer at the soonest. So we're still keeping an eye on the EQS SUV which is to be unveiled early next year. If it checks all of the boxes, we will cancel the iX preorder and order an EQS SUV instead.
Also the iDrive 8.0 system is a huge downgrade compared to 7.0 (which in my opinion was worse than the intuitive 6.0). Annoyingly BMW now hides the climate controls in the touchscreen. Seat and Steering Wheel Heating, Fan Speed, Mode/Direction, etc. are all in sub-menus and not present on the home screen unlike the newest MBUX and Audi systems requiring too many steps for simple tasks.
I'm also surprised you're looking at these vehicles considering your vehicle history and since the iX is not as large as an X7 or GLS and will not have a third row (EQS SUV is still unknown).

The wife said the only EV SUV she'd be willing to replace the GLE with so far is the Rivian R1S. This is the EV along with the R1T Pick Up and Lucid Air that I am personally excited for.

2022 Mercedes EQS 580
We'd actually prefer a 2-row SUV, we no longer need a 3-row SUV and even considered the X5 when we bought the X7 but the second row legroom in the X5 was to tight IMO. Of course we'll wait to see and test drive the iX before we buy. As I said, we may likely end up buying an EQS SUV but we want to keep our options open. As for the looks of the iX, I admit it's odd looking in photos but I'll reserve judgement until I see it for myself. I would prefer the tech in the EQS (Hyper-screen, etc.) but don't know yet what MB will offer in it. I have plenty of time to make some decisions.
The reason the second row room in the X5 is poor is because of the short wheelbase and long hood. The latest GLE by contrast has a longer wheelbase even though the car is the same length as the X5. The longer wheelbase allows more legroom in the second row. The IX has a longer wheelbase than the X5 and comparable to the 2020 GLE.
Wheelbase comparison
X5 117.1
GLE 117.9
BMW IX 118.1
Rear legroom
X5 37.4"
GLE 40.9"
BMW IX Unknown

Funny you should mention the GLE. We had a fully loaded 2020 GLE 450 on order at the launch of the new redesign but after six months of delays and still no ETA, we decided to buy the X7. I really wanted that GLE with all the bells and whistles but it wasn't to be. I'll order an iX when my name comes in the pecking order but I'm really most interested in the EQS SUV. My wife will most likely want the Benz but the X7 surprised us both, it's been a very reliable SUV so the iX deserves a look. Even if we buy the iX and then fall in love with the EQS SUV later, my guess is we wouldn't lose much if any money as the iX will be in demand and people will be willing to over-pay to get one.
