Charging and Range

After just 13 days of driving, here are some results:

Distance: 648 miles
Energy: 205 kWh
Cost: $34.50 (our PPL kWh rate is currently 0.1683)

Charging at 9.6 kWh: add 31 miles of range for every hour of charging
Range: 200 miles of range in 6.5 hrs

Estimated range at 80%: 262 mi
Estimated range at 100%: 327.5 mi

Gas comparison: the BMW X7 we traded was getting 13 mpg on premium gas. Driving it 648 miles at $4.20/gal for premium would cost $209.30, a saving of $174.80 in 13 days!

Joe is your home charger 40a or 48a? Wondering if the EQS is limited to 40a on AC or if you have tried 48a (which should give 11,5kW should the car onboard charger support it)

If you go on a road trip soon get it down to under 10% SoC and hit a 350kW EA station, let's see what the charging curve looks like

Our ChargePoint Home Flex is connected to a 50A breaker (40A continuous) and delivers 9.6 kW (max AC charging capacity) to the onboard charger. The max DC capacity is 200 kW.

From the owners manual:

BTW, I live in Reading PA and the closest EA chargers (or any other brand) are about 50 minutes away and are 150 kW chargers. There is not a single DC fast charger in Reading. The dealers have several 6 kW chargers and MB of Reading has a 24 kW DC charger but nothing fast enough to test with. Of course there are nearby Tesla Superchargers so hopefully Tesla opens them up to all cars this year. Otherwise, some areas we want to travel to in the EQS SUV are not yet possible or would be risky.

I am still confused about this because I did see in the order guide they say it is 9.6kwh max (40a), but most specs I am reading online say 11kwh with optional 22kwh charging upgrade. We clearly don't have that upgrade option here in the US but I'm also wondering if it will charge at 11kwh if I install a 48amp charger. I'm deciding between 40 and 48 and may go 48 just to future proof.

Anyone with a 48amp charger that has seen how long it takes to charge?

I could be wrong, but I believe those specs are for the EQS sedan. I'm guessing that the people writing those articles are assuming that the SUV will have the same specs (I know I would make that assumption).

The owners manual for the EQS SUV says 9.6 kW. At 9.6 kW you gain 31 miles of range for every hour of charging. That’s 248 miles of range every night. But if you limit your charge to no more than 80% and allow it to run down to 20% you would only need to add 60% (180 miles in six hours) every night.

Buyers needing more range should be looking at other EV options.

What other EV SUV’s have more range?

IDK but some were asking about charging at a higher rate. Some research is needed to understand what’s possible, supported, and more important, how much range you need each day. Ideally you should charge at the lowest possible kW to promote battery health. The max limit of 9.6 kW may not be best, you may want to throttle it back depending on your daily range needs to support better battery health. This is the new frontier.

Battery health is something I will read more about, but my basic desire is to maximize the potential of the vehicle. If I have to spend 1.5-2K to install a charger and if I'm spending close to 150K on an EV, I might as well install the best charger for my vehicle.

I charged three times so far at the nearest EA with 3x150kWh chargers. I was able to get 72kWh max during the 30 minute session with any of the three chargers. However, other EV's (Tesla, VW, Hyundai) were claiming that they have seen better elsewhere. Anyone charing at an EA that has gotten better than 72kWh? I had to charge twice (you have to wait 60 mins in between 30 min charging sessions if you want it to be free) to get from 16% to 80%.

I own a ChargePoint Home Flex to charge my 2017 Tesla S 100D and Volvo 2021 XC40 Recharge. After more than a year of use, I am very pleased with it. It came as a free perk with the Volvo.

I have a EQS SUV 580 on order, though I'm a little disappointed that the EQS will only charge up to 40 amps at 240volts.
