Hi! Does anyone know if it's possible to install an OEM trailer hitch to a 2-row EQS SUV 580 after the car is delivered? This is basically the only reason why we went for a 2-row instead of 3-row. We actually placed customer orders with two dealers nearby but one of them is ghosting on me and the other one is still going at way over MSRP at this time, so I've been trying to find one across the country. But so far I haven't found one in inventory that has the hitch listed as one of the options. I wonder if it's something that's always service installed which is why it's not listed on the build, or it's just so unpopular that all these builds just don't have it. Is it something I can get my local service center to install after the delivery?
Contact a service department manager and ask if they will do the installation. Sales people are quite unreliable.
Makes sense; thanks! My local dealer's parts department called Mercedes for me and looks like the OEM hitch isn't currently available after the build and they don't currently have a plan yet to make the parts available. Not sure about later on though. But the service guy also said there's likely gonna be third party options soon and they'll be happy to install those too.
I sent an email to ecohitch about making one for the SUV, I think it's in the queue... I'm really hoping one comes out soon for bike carriers.
Interesting. Is Ecohitch a good vendor? I’m very new to trailer hitches and was hesitant about going with non-OEM part but I guess it’s fine if it’s an established manufacturer.
Update: I got EcoHitch [1] installed at Rack Attack in San Francisco and although it was designed for EQS 450 SUV, it works on my 2-two EQS 580 SUV as well! The shop even gave me some discounts on the gears. Highly recommend them if you’re in the Bay Area.
Depends on who's instructions you read. I do think that it makes it easier - albeit longer to install the system. Depending on your hitch (UHaul -vs- Curt) they also mount in entirely different places.
Does the bumper cover have to come off for the install and is any trimming required?
Yes the plastic bumper needs to come off, and a small square cut needs to be cut to allow the hitch socket to come out. The square cut was visually very subtle and you’d have to look for it to realize it exists.
One other thing to note is that an aluminum piece behind the plastic bumper (confusingly also called a bumper) was removed — the hitch itself replaces it.
