Phantom Braking

Had phantom braking for the first time today. Around 2000 miles on car. We were going around 40 mph and the car suddenly hit the brakes very hard and then let go. Sunny day, nothing in front, no car. Will report to Benz to see what they have to say.

Yeah I have started experiencing this over the past month - car was fine for first 6 months, until then

Now had 2 instances

First was on my drive where car slammed on brake for no reason at about 10 mph and wife nearly hit her head on dashboard

Second was this week on motorway where car slammed brakes on for no reason - luckily nobody behind me

Maybe a software regression? Hopefully MB get telemetry like we do on the products my company makes, and they have a marker for this and track its frequency in the field?!

Angry Phantom Braking

9-10,000 miles, no other problems except sunroom has gotten stuck in open position twice (software reset needed) but now twice in the past 3 months (purchased 11/2022) phantom braking has occurred with ZERO obstacles, cars, squirrels, nothing around. Was not using cruise control even. going 40-45, audible alert, red dash lights then WHAM! Both times wife was not injured, thankfully seat belt locked as it should.

Local dealer going to check diagnostics and log this week, but last time it happened, they had no ability to find or more importantly fix a problem? So a beautiful and otherwise awesome vehicle, $143,000, that could send my family into the windshield or dash at any given moment without warning. What the heck are we supposed to do with THAT knowledge!?

Will see what dealer says and let you know. This seems like a major problem/glitch and MB should be making it right ASAP for all affected.

Please get back to us with Mercedes’ response. This happened to me at 2,000 miles in strong regeneration as I was gliding up to my mailbox to get the mail. Even though I was going slow it was quite jolting and disturbing.

Sure thing - both times it has happened to us it was in NO or normal recuperative braking and she was going 40-45mph! Not good....

Quick question, was the car dirty when this happened?

Nope, wash it nearly every week. Never has mud or thick dirt on front or any sensors/cameras. Unless 1-2 days of usual pollen caused it!

i dont think this has to do with the brakes ...its the sensors i think, before the EQS , i had a GLC and it would sometimes trigger the brakes thinking it saw something when i am turning or reversing.

I took it to the dealership and they re-tuned it. I have not done it with the EQS but yesterday it did go nuts when i was reversing into a parking spot AT the mercedes dealership thinking it saw something and the brakes kicked in.

might have to have the techs look at it too like they did in the GLC.

i wonder if thats why Tesla removed their LIDARs and went with Visual(Camera) views, maybe Tesla was seeing "ghosts" too. sensors are only as good as the computer programming that processes the information ... and the computer program is only as good as the human that programs it .... so its fallible!

It happened to my wife today when she was driving on local street. She described that her car brake so hard all the sudden and let go. And now her neck feels sort.

I have had 4 incidents. 2 backing up and 2 going forward. Slow speed each time, but drastic in each case. Normal recuperative setting. Don't want to turn of automatic in case there really is a reason for it. Just hope no one hits me from the back.

Have you checked to see what sensitivity setting you have it set on?

happened to me (sedan) three days ago. (suv happens once too, see above)

drive mode was set on intelligent recuperation.
I was 3rd car at the left turn lane. the car in front of me is a pick up truck. when light turns green, I followed the car in front and somehow car itself applied brake so hard about mill-sec then let go.
(it feels like you are the passenger and driver steps on the brake all the way and let go the brake right away without tell you. or the moment when rollercoaster approaching to stop x3 times faster)
car did not stop completely as my feet still in the gas pedal and I just keep driving.
neck does feel uncomfortable but 3-5 min later is ok. not as bad as rear ended by someone (happened before and neck feels very sore)

Just happened for the third time.

Had the vehicle since Nov.

this morning was the third time it has slammed on its brakes all by itself.

the kicker is in all three instances it was detecting a shadow across the road!

mercedes needs to look at this before someone gets severe whiplash.

I had the same problem today for the 1st time with my EQS 450 4matic, at 1800 miles less than 2 months old. I was doing cruise control at 50 miles and inteligent recouperation. I was lucky that nothing was behind me (and nothing was in front) but it could be much worse!!

I have a 2022 eqs 580, with two occurrences of phantom braking on a highway. Dealer found multiple communication faults with instrument cluster and did a software update to clear faults. The vehicle stalled on the highway. Any perspectives if this could happen again? If issues cannot be replicated by the dealer, how can I be sure this does not happen again?

I have a 2022 GLE 450 4MATIC and this has happend to me repeatedly exactly as you described multiple times since I got it. It is at MB now as recently after the last occurence I noticed a vibration in the steering wheel as I would brake at any application. It has gotten progressively worse. Upon taking the car into MB the service guy told me my rotors are warped however rotors and brake pads have plenty of life on them. I am 100% confident the warping in the rotors prior to excess brake wear was due the vehicle locking up the brakes abruptly 8-9 different x. Ghost braking, nothing around, no shadows, no dogs, cats, people the car will out of nowhere lock up the brakes to a stop while all of the buzzers are going off. Just fortunate that no one was behind us when this has happened. It is extremely nerve racking as this comes on completely unexpected and scares the bejeezus out of anyone in the car.

2023 Eqs 450
My wife has a 2023 EQS450 and the pre collision activated on its own five times with no cars or anything in the front of the car. I took the car to the dealership to see if they can find the problem and they said everything is fine. The 5th time was tonight and my wife recorded it when it happened. There were no cars or objects in front of us when it happened. Now my wife is scared to drive the car with my children because she’s afraid if it breaks at a higher speed and someone could rear end her. Here is the video we recorded when it happened.

two weeks ago it happened to me again while SoCal has Santa Ana wind, this is the 2nd time occurred
but I did notice a huge a$$ leaf flow over left to right then the brake applied. it was about 30mph to 5mph and lucky the car behind me not too close.
I think computer picks up as someone or object crossed over the front that caused braking.
