Tesla Adapter

Anyone have any experience using a Tesla adapter? If so, which one and how fast does it charge? I see there are several available but would like a recommendation. Thanks for your help.

As far as I know the current adapters are only for “Destination Sites” such as Hotels and B&B’s which would be the same as the Level 2 set ups we use at home. In other words the current adapters do not work at Tesla Fast chargers.

I am using the $150 Lectron Tesla to J1772 adapter and it works fine up to 48A. I did not encounter any Tesla destination chargers delivering more than 8 kW on a recent cross-Country trip. I did stay at a few hotels which only had Tesla destination chargers available.

There's supposedly a new one being made for Ford that will work with Superchargers. Rumor is that might also open up Tesla's network to other CCS vehicles, no magic dock required. Keeping my fingers crossed... that would make road tripping in an EV much less stressful, IMHO.

The hardware will be in place to do so. And getting government infrastructure money probably requires Elon open up network to the public.

Those of us with a Level 2 home charger will likely need to install a new cable with the NACS plug (just my guess). I'm also guessing that the manufacturers of CCS chargers will start offering both cable (NACS and CCS). But when traveling, EV's with the NACS port will have a much easier, stress-free drive.

What my question is… will MB be able to retrofit our original EQS’s with NACS ports or will we be stuck just going to CCS chargers? If the whole system here in the U.S. goes to NACS why would the chargers be fitted with CCS adapters just for a minority of EV’s outfitted with CCS?

I imagine, if Mercedes officially joins the club, there'd be some sort of supercharger adapter for us like everyone else is getting. The explanation/excuse has something to do with communication standards for plug-and-charge. But the Magic Dock doesn't do any vehicle-specific stuff so I dunno. Seems to me Tesla could release a universal adapter for all CCS cars if they really wanted to. I'm not sayin' it's all one big publicity stunt to boost Tesla's stock price but... hmmm...

I'm confident CCS chargers will be around for the next several years since nearly all EV's (other than Tesla) use CCS.

The adapters for level 2 charging already exists and from what I understand a level 3 adapter is also easy to implement but it would also require Tesla to open their regular superchargers to work with non Tesla brands if they are to be any use right now. Otherwise the underlying protocol is same but ViNs are blocked.

I wouldn't mind one bit about having access to Tesla's superchargers at a 2x, 3x premium

I want the availability of the Tesla Super Charger network for long trips and the heck with the current other brands. I stopped at a Charge Point fast charger out of town last week. It connected for 7 minutes, stopped and would not re-start, and charged me $20.

Lucid's CEO made a good point yesterday that it's really just a connector. What everyone needs to agree on are the protocols and standards going forward, like making sure plug-and-charge interoperates between different vendor systems and chargers can output 800-1000V not just 400V like most Superchargers.

Now Volvo is going with NACS and access to supercharger network and will provide adapters for EX30/EX90 initially. I am hoping Mercedes is next at this point.

I also hope Mercedes switches to the NACS plug in the near future. The state of DC Fast Charging in my section of the country is not good. There is not a single DC Fast Charger in our entire county. We're planning a trip from PA to Myrtle Beach and along 95 there are plenty of DC Fast Chargers but from the last DC Fast Charger on 95 to Myrtle Beach (about an hours drive), there is not a single DC Fast Charger. And once we get to Myrtle Beach, there is only one (that's correct) DC Fast Charger in all of Myrtle Beach, that's a 26 mile stretch and it's a single 62.5 kWh charger. Pathetic. No surprise there is a bank of 8 Tesla chargers a few miles from the home we're renting. The country on the whole is not yet ready for EV's but Tesla is and they hold the keys to growing the EV industry. And let's admit it, while many of us may not want to buy a Tesla (for now), they have the best charging network in the US and their NACS plug is a much better design. So companies vying for space in the EV charging arena may soon be changing direction and equip their stations with the NACS plugs. I knew going in that the infrastructure for EV charging was not yet ready for non-Tesla vehicles, but we wanted an EV bad enough to ignore all of that and hope for the best. This will all work itself out in the coming years but for early adopters like us, we'll have to put up with the growing pains.
