Rear wheel impact

Hello,
I slipped on an icy condition road and I had a small impact with the rear wheel. The tie rod is bent and has a lot of malfunctions on the screen.
I took it to the dealer today. They gave a $13K repair estimate.
Is that normal?

Dayum did they give you a list of parts or what?

Did you contact your Insurance company?

I really dunno but with the rear-wheel steering and airmatic suspension stuff, plus Mercedes labor, I could see that price happening real easy.

I have the same AMG rims on my 500 SUV and have to say that despite how great they look you literally can't touch a curb without causing damage. They might as well be made out of glass with all the stress they've caused me. I'm really starting to hate them.

Well, check out what they are replacing, but I'm not surprised in the least. Getting bumped at Target by a shopping cart would cost $2000. You need a new wheel, tire, suspension parts, probably a few sensors, alignment, recalibrate, fees for the fees...easy you get to $13,000.

Yes I got the estimated part list. I am attaching. Since the price is so high, I contacted my insurance company. Let see what happens.

I don't understand why so many parts needs replacement. They probably don't know this vehicle well and they replace everything they see. I can only say tie rod bent. But look at the list below.

The part estimate is replacing the entire front rack assembly. It is hard to say without seeing the damage, but I doubt the dealer wants to risk blessing a smaller repair to just the tie rod when such an important part experienced a crunch. Just replacing the tie rod is something one might do if the car were 10 years old at an independent garage or in your own garage, and see what happens regarding no fluid leaking and the car aligning within spec.

I think I'd buy a new third-party set before I paid $2100 out-of-pocket for one remanufactured rim but since insurance is paying for it and the government mandates we buy it... At the very least I'd tell them I want to keep my old rim for the meager $150 they're offering in return. They'll have to remanufacture someone else's for a $2000 profit. Business is business, baby!

The thing is insurance pays all expenses. I am only paying $1000 deductable. Can I ask them to put brand new rim? Am I allow to take old one as well?

It is rear wheel though so is that part number rear wheel steering gear (which I imagine could be same as front really with limiters)

MB supposedly does not allow for repair of damaged wheels, per corporate policy. See attached. We had one bent rim replaced with a brand new one at the dealer.

This particular 10" wide rear wheel is available on eBay for under $400.

Word of caution about Ebay wheels--I've learned the hard way three different times. They always seem to have problems, and in ways the seller may not even realize. They've ended up on Ebay due to being removed from an accident car, perhaps purchased damaged and refinished, perhaps cracked. It is just not worth it imho. Also imho, it is not even worth trying to fix your own wheels--I agree with the MB official statement I posted earlier in this string. You can buy brand new real MB wheels from allloywheelsdirect.com out of the UK. The wheels ship straight from Germany with no core charge. I just bought a new set for my CL, and they have stock that has not been available in the US for many years. My new set cost only $500 to ship--amazing considering shipping from a US based shipper wouldn't be much less. I also bought a set of winter wheels from them for my EQB. The CL set cost $1700 including shipping, and the EQB set cost $1200 including shipping. The EQB with Nokian snow tires is like a mountain goat--it's like the snow isn't even there. It is rare you can say 'great deal' about anything related to MB cars, but this is close.

That's good advice. I purchased 20" wheels for my EQS SUV from Alloy Wheels Direct and I also had an excellent experience. Not only was the shipping reasonably priced, the wheels arrived in two days. I agree that you do have to be cautious getting wheels through eBay. I purchased two sets of wheels, but I did pick them up from a local seller. I have also sold a set of 50th anniversary SL550 wheels on eBay that were in almost perfect condition. I had good experiences purchasing used wheels at car shows. But that's not possible in the Winter months here in the Northeast.

I agree with you. I won't be getting a chance remanufactured rims. Even I didn't get my old one from the dealer. I thought it wouldn't be worth it.

After they replaced all the parts on the list the car started making bad bearing noises they said sorry for not seeing this issue and they want an additional $5K for the bearing and axel replacement. Also, they replaced Torque Struts to avoid creaking noise but I still have the noise. What a nightmare car.

It is the reality of owning a high end car with a lot of features, it is not really specific to EQS. Any car with rear wheel steering and dynamic air suspension will be very expensive to repair beyond simple tire/wheel damage.

I had a Q5 years ago, I scraped a short boulder while parking with my front passenger door and it cost 7k to repair fully as the parts are not really designed to be repairable.
