Protective Front End Wrap - yes or no?

Our EQS 580 SUV is arriving today, hallelujah!

I live in Colorado, so our method of handling snow and ice involves a gravely mixture, which ends up throwing quite a few rocks up against vehicle front ends and windshields, are there any precautions I should know about if I were to have a protective wrap installed on the front?

I had PPF installed only on the front of our MY23 EQS 580 SUV and now three years later it's showing signs of lifting in spots. We're about to trade it on a new MY26 EQS 400 SUV and I'm only having ceramic coating applies, no PPF. Just my experience, others may have had a better experience with their PPF.

BTW, the dealership is having all of the PPF removed when they detail it.

Ceramic is great for shine and protection from the elements, but only PPF will offer protection from sand and small stones. Worth it IMHO if you plan to keep the vehicle a long time. You can always re-wrap it at some point if the old stuff starts to look ratty or peel.

I had the dealer wrapped the front bumper, hood, mirrows. Still looking good 18 months later.

The dealer installed PPF on the whole front end of our 2023 EQS, with a guarantee. We have had a small repair done when it had bubbles appear under the surface, probably from the brushless car wash. I notice another area in need of repair and will get it done next spring. They use a lot of grit here in Saskatoon in the winter especially when it gets down to temperatures that salt and potash will not work to melt ice. We have two paint chips down to the primer on the a-pillars and that is it. Took out a windshield as well. If you look carefully at the PPF you can see quite a few nicks that have not self healed but the paint looks fine as far as I can tell. Will need to peel the PPF to know for sure. I did put a ceramic coating on the whole car this fall. Maybe that will help keep the PPF in better shape and maybe it won't but it sure looks good. It is expensive, so it depends on the owner, but I think it will be worth the investment over time, especially when it is time to part with the vehicle. The PPF still looks very good on our car after 2 plus years.

EQS 450+ SUV 2024
I drive over 3k miles a month and mostly highway. My EQS SUV's front end would be really beat-up after a year of pushing it hard over 40k miles. PPF is amazing! One reason we usually just purchase rather than lease cars.

that is a lot of driving! Would you care to share how this has been with your EQS?

I went ahead and had PPF installed on the front end and up the hood about 2 feet, but I also did sections of the piano black around the wheelwells and the B pillar, and the rear bumper where our dog jumps into the back.

Happy so far!

Yes PPF is worth the cost. Ceramic coatings will not protect the paint from any impact from stones or sand.

My wife had her SL 55 AMG done and we just had her daily driver, Toyota Camry done. My F430 also has PPF. If you want to keep your car looking nice over a long period of time, get PPF. The quality of the install matters too and all of the new PPF is self healing. If a rock dings the PPF a little, the heat from a blow dryer will pull out the ding.

EQS 450+ SUV 2024
Holding up well both inside and outside

Driven over 45k miles on my 2024 EQS SUV 450+, I installed PPF on the full front, all doors, rear bumper, and lower trunk section. The PPF has held up quite well so far, have a few minor chip damage and slight discoloration. I got the ceramic infused PPF. So there was no need for additional ceramic coating.

I also did a ceramic coating to help protect the beige interior and for easy cleaning. I think it has been effective so far, since it still looks pristine even with little kids using the 2nd and 3rd rows.

Regarding ride comfort, the EQS SUV has been amazing and is probably the one vehicle you would want to spend that much time. The combination of air suspensions, the continuous electric drive, comfortable seats, and the driver assistance package make it feel like taking a flight. It significantly reduces fatigue on long road trips and feels like you only spent half the time on the road.

Reliability has been quite good. No major issues due to the high mileage so far. Mostly isolated software warnings on headlamps, suspensions, and ambient lighting, that disappear on system restarts.Initially had a leaking coolant issue fixed after delivery, and that was it. I think it is going to be a great long term family SUV. We will probably get to 300k miles in 10 years.

When I have talked to the service department one thing that did come up is wrapping the sensors is a bad idea. They have a lot of cars coming into the shop where the sensor was wrapped causing issues with the sensors. This occurs both when the wrap first occurs and later as the wrap starts coming loose cause false proximity warnings or blinds the sensor completely. You might want to discuss this with both the service department at the dealership and the wrapping service. Who will be responsible if the wrap damages a sensor - sensors and the recalibration needed after replacement are not cheap.
