Since they just rolled out the store 2 days ago I don't expect it to run smoothly. Probably a good idea to wait a while and let them stabilize it. I'm sure the support staff has probably barely been trained and they have no actual experience troubleshooting it yet.

I think the main pain point with them offering navigation OTA is the cell/data download speed that varies greatly from one place to another. The maps are also multi-gigabyte downloads, which doesn't help.

 

That's an interesting point I didn't consider. The car obviously has to download the map data first since it doesn't come from the factory. A full map update is something like 18GB for the entire USA + Canada + Mexico, about 15GB for just the USA. The OTA updates only install your home region and the other regions have to be downloaded manually, specifically because it's a lot of data. I'm curious if this only installs the map for you home region or if it's downloading the entire USA+. If the latter then yes that's gonna take a while.

Does it download the map while the car is not in use though? If not we would have to drive around for a while. I live in a big city and T-Mobile is pretty good here.

Nope, since the electronics are powered by the 12V battery all downloads and updates are paused if the car is not in use. This is partly why I generally update the maps manually. It takes about 20 minutes from the SD card and the ignition needs to be on. OTA updates are downloaded in the background while driving and then installed, so generally one doesn't notice. I thought I read a disclaimer on the store website, too, that activation only takes place when the car is in use.

 

If you do it over USB and turn off the car, it does pause it.
But OTA, I've had it happen with the car fully off and the app notified me.

and then maybe……State the approximate time on the page where you purchase it.
if they thought they couldn’t handle the volume then they should have throttled the sales of Nav.
To just leave everyone in this position is abjectly unprofessional.

 

The app notification is only letting you know that there is an update as far as I know. I know that the OTA updates pause when the car is parked, because I've watched it resume the next day by leaving the update screen up. The maps are not updated until you get a notification in the car. Maybe being electric it's different in the EQS, but I doubt it since the 12V battery is currently only recharged while the car is in use, so they would not let the update run and potentially drain the 12V battery.

 

I finally got into the store and Dashcam is not there....however what is there is all the "services" that came with the car that are going to expire in a year and will be available for repurchase for various prices. The worst one is the Mercedes Me Charge which is going to cost $80 to renew when it expires in 2024. Needless to say I will be working on alternatives between now and expiration dates.

 

 

This can be pretty much only the case for simple activations where no software or data needs to be downloaded to the car first. For example live traffic etc. Those are just a license activation. But as said above, if you purchase navigation it needs to download the map data first and that's a big download. Ain't gonna happen in 2 minutes.

 

I turned it on and off several times after buying the navigation. It didn’t work and I don’t have the navigation button in the menu. The person on the phone yesterday said that they can’t see this service being activated in my account so it must be an internal issue.

 

There is really nothing there for new owners at least for the first year. I was hoping for something more.

 

Please do update if/when your Nav is ready!

 

Just curious but not suggested, have you tried to look it up through the Dealer Mode, and see if the option to activate it is there?
