Tinting front windshield

My usual tint guy didn't want to tint the EQS windshield because the area where the windshield meet the dash is so tight he didn't think he could get his microfiber rope there to soak up the water. Took it a second tint guy and he had the same concern.

I know some people here have had their front windshield tinted. Did any of your tint guys mention anything about this? I've heard there are a lot of electronics in that area and the idea of not being able to soak up the water seem very risky.

Of no assistance to you whatsoever, but I personally rely on my Polaroid sunglasses rather than tinting a windshield. Just me. Sorry 😞

Haha, yeah I don’t want it for darkness, just heat reduction on those 90F+ sunny days.

I had to change my lenses from Polaroid to regular as I couldn’t see the HUD at all.

My tint guys had no problem with it, did not mention it. I have 70% 3M on my windshield.

Understand heat reduction’

Also understand HUD problem, but have been wearing prescription (trifocals now) Polaroidd since they could be bought; there’s no going back now!

My tint guy just mentioned that the windshield wasn't easy but he got the job done.

Do you know if they put down something to soak up the water or they just “risked it”?

I have had several attempts at tinting windshields on previous cars, and my conclusion is that it always affects optical clarity. I simply stopped taking the chance on it. Also if you ordered the acoustic comfort package then your windshield is laminated anyway.

My car was bought off the lot and unfortunately doesn’t have the laminated glass. If it did I definitely wouldn’t consider tint.

All windshields in cars have laminated glass just for your information. My family had a auto glass business since the 50's so I'm very familiar with auto glass. Now, back in the very early years of cars all of the glass was just regular glass. Not exactly sure when laminated glass started but my guess would be in the 40's.

I had my windshield tinted with 70% 3M Crystaline. Major reduction in heat, easier to drive into a sunset. The bad part is the polarization, it's not bad, but noticeable when driving with sunglasses. It's also noticeable on the windshield-mounted driving assistance cameras. I don't find any issues with overall clarity, though. This was a last minute job for the installer, so I had to use a bit of elbow grease, myself, to clean the windshield after letting it dry a couple of days to get that level of clarity.

Thanks! I went to the tint shop that does a ton of very high end cars and sure enough, they said they can do to. Apparently they also do all the the Mercedes from a local dealer. Have an appointment in a couple of weeks.

The acoustic glass option ($1,000 option) isn’t just laminated glass. I don’t know all the details but my dealer explained it as a 3 layer glass vs single layer. Mercedes takes 2 laminated glass panes and sandwiches a middle layer of material for sound proofing and heat rejection. Mercedes highly recommends it in hot sunny climates.

@SWFL, The 3 layers are, 1 glass pane, 1 layer of vinyl film approximately .015 thick and another glass pane. The difference in it and a windshield is that the windshield has a .030 layer of vinyl for added safety reasons. Laminated glass is for sound proofing only. It is used in a lot of recording studios just for that reason. It has nothing at all to do with heat. Don't believe that crap if that's what the salesman is trying to tell you.
Mercedes takes 2 laminated glass panes and sandwiches a middle layer of material for sound proofing and heat rejection. That would mean there are 4 total pieces of glass and something between them. Really: that would make the damn thing about 1/2 inch or more thick. NOT!!!
