Drive the car. Runflats are terrible. It doesn't matter if you drive in Michigan, New York, California or Florida. Runflats are terrible.

Run flats are indeed contribute to a worse ride but shouldn't impact winter driving if you have the all season tires. If you have summer (and all season) tires and living in MI as we do, I would certainly consider installing a good winter tire. The difference is remarkable in traction and stoping distance in wet, slush and snow. Summer tires get hard and stiff below about 50 degrees which leads to serious traction issues.

I would also invest in a portable tire inflator and sealant so that you don't get stuck on the side of the road with a flat with run flats. I was quite surprised the car didn't come with one.

I have to say the suspension on this car is so good, and runflat technology has improved. I have runflats on my current EQS580, and I also had non run-flats on the other EQS580 I had for the first 5 months of the year. I prefer the car with runflats and would choose them again if I had the choice. I prefer it for 2 reasons:
1) It has genuine functional value. I got a nail in my tire and was able to drive to the dealer and replace the tire.
2) It actually handles better and the difference in ride quality is very subtle - partly because the ride quality of this car is so exceptional.

My concern with run flats is their tendency to have blow outs instead of leaks. Once they blow out they are no better than a regular tire and depending on your location many smaller tire shops do not carry run flats. Also larger National chains may refuse to repair a run flat due to liability so just a regular puncture generally means buying a new tire rather than a patch or plug.

I have wheel and tire insurance so the inability to repair a run-flat is good for me because it means I get a new tire instead of a repair.

I have to say I have never heard of a blow-out on runflats and my experience with them is that there is no blow out. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, just that I haven't experienced it and don't know anyone who has.

In the case of the incident I had a couple of weeks ago, the tire picked up a screw which resulted in a total loss of pressure. But I was able to drive the car for 4 days until I had time to have the tire replaced which was fully covered by the protection package.

Runflats have an earned terrible reputation for stiff ride....a long time ago. New runflats from Pirelli and Michelin don't deserve all the crap they get. They are virtually the same as the regular versions just more expensive. In winter they work exactly like their counterparts since the difference is sidewall construction rubber compound and tread are also identical. In summary modern RFT are virtually identical to their Non RFT versions. Unfortunately, most of the highest performing tires for summer or winter are not available in RFT form. One exception is the Pirelli P Zero. An excellent (though not the best) summer tire that does come in RFT.

When I first got my M550, it had first generation Goodyear F1 Asymmetric runflats. I had blowouts twice, after hitting small potholes. Each time I had to replace with a cheap non-runflat until I could get another runflat. The second time, I canned the Goodyears, and purchased Michelin PS3ZP runflats. They were fantastic....smooth, quiet, grippy. They had great performance, and I never had another problem. I would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone who wants or needs a Summer runflat tire. Having said that, my non-runflat 5th generation Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics on my current EQS are performing well. My fingers are crossed, but I will replace them when I need to with Michelins. Haven't decided yet on whether it will be PS4S or PS3ZPs.
