I was comparing how android auto looks compared to airplay. And it seems like the right 1/3 of the android auto screen is stuck either showing directions or what music is playing. It won't let me full screen google maps or any other app. Is this standard behavior or am I missing a setting somewhere?
Are you talking about what it looks like below? If so that's the new Android Auto dashboard. Just tap the navigation tile to make it fullscreen or the Google Maps app in the menu bar at the bottom. CarPlay has had this type of dashboard for a while now (see 2nd picture).

You have a few options. Install aaad from github. Then you can install fermata to watch YouTube full screen
Get an AI box such as tbox plus to turn your screen into an android tablet. Or adjust android auto to full screen. With the tablet option you will need a data plan or insert a sim card into the ai box.
I use the ai box as an android tablet with a mint mobile sim card. The ai box is compatible in any car that has carplay. Hope that helps. A lot cheaper than some of Mercedes me services
On the hyperscreen there is no way to stretch it to cover the entire screen. Which, is actually not bad since the steering wheel would cover the edge closest to the driver. In its "frame" the entire android view is visible.
