Tire replacement on 450+

Hitting 20k miles on my EQS 450+ with 20" tires. Anyone gone from the performance to non-performance tires? Pirelli p-zero's are on it now.

thanks

I used winter tires so I guess not exactly the same situation 19 in Blizzak LM 25. The car worked fine and handled well, however, the high performance tires do offer more confidence when driving "enthusiastically". If you are not the envelope pushing type you will probably never notice any difference.

EQS 450+
I probably have retired the "enthusiastic" mode. Only 80 I hit now is on my personal odometer. Thanks for chiming in!

Are your tires worn out at 20k miles, or do you just want to switch to a different tire type?

I never thought I would endorse Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics......but here I go. Have almost 17K on mine, which are the 5th generation model, with lots of tread left. The are apparently tuned for mileage optimazation, and I have no complaints. I am considering Michelin PS4AS when I need to replace them, but I need to do more research on how this will impact mileage. They are rated for lots of miles. I hated the Goodyears (1st generation) on my M550, but they were also runflats. I popped two of them quickly, and changed brands. But the ones on my EQS (non-runflats) are doing very well.

Looks like the F1 Asymmetrics will not fit the 450+.

What size are you using. I have Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics (Gen 5) in 265/40R 21 on my 450+. OEM spec.

Edit: saw your original post with 20 inch wheels. Sorry. I have AMG wheels and exterior/interior enhancements.

Good to hear. I have the same tires on my car which I operate primarily in SE Florida. I have only 4000 miles on it so far and no noticeable wear I can detect.

You took the words right out of my mouth!
The PS4 shurely, will offer higher grip, but as you, for me milage is king.

I ditched the OEM tires for Continental DWS as soon as I got the car. It is hard to go wrong with them, as they are good at everything (hence the name dry wet snow). I live in Iowa so I have to worry about bad weather, so perhaps if you're in Florida you have less to worry about. I've used them on almost all my cars for years, and always been happy.

Though there are other good tires out there the question is since they were not designed specifically for EV’s will the daily mileage be degraded on a EV?

Maybe, but I have not noticed it on my various EV's I've had over the years. It is probably so minor you would not notice it day to day. The other generic issue I've had with specialty EV tires over time is that they wear out fast, and cost more. I guess we all have to weigh out our own circumstances of cost, location, type of driving, etc.

EV tires provide about up to 5% better milage.

Same here, I never thought I would ever endorse Goodyear, but the Goodyear that came with the car has been superb. I want to replace it with the same, it would be the first time ever buying Goodyear.

Our car (EQS580) came with PIRELLI P ZERO ALL SEASON RUN FLAT., 265/40R21 105H XL, UTQG: 500 A A, Eco Focus: ELECT, Electric Vehicle Tuned. After about 10k, they seem great in dry, wet, and snow conditions. They are not inexpensive ($480 at Tirerack) but probably well worth it with the 500 treadwear and AA for traction and temp. In previous EV and ICE cars we often had Conti DWS and were happy with them. At the moment, I would replace them with the P0.

My 450+ came with the Bridgestone Turanza All-Season Runflats (MOE-S) and they just ran out of tread after 15K miles. Just swapped them out for the Pirelli P-Zero All-Season Runflats (MOE-S) and I must say, the Pirelli feel more controllable and are also more quiet (I took some db samples on my usual freeway stretch and saw a few dbs of improvement).

My 450+ came with these tires. How is your treadwear after 10K?

I can’t remember exactly where I read a recent article on EV tires (think it may have come from AAA). It was entitled do you need special tires for an EV. The gist of the article was yes, specific tires designed for EV are better for the car. They talked about the weight of EV’s and how that produces extra strain on the tires. Said EV tires are more reinforced so they won’t flex as much cornering, etc. in fact they mentioned the last thing you want your tires to do is separate from the wheel while taking a corner at high speed. Sounded a little over the top but it seemed like an unbiased article to me. I will definitely get EV tires when the time arises.

The EV tire dilema about longevity is another red herring. No one complains hiw kong ab F150 tire lasts, and of course, weigh more than any non truck EV.
Most summer performance tires last less than 20k since they use a sticky, soft rubber compound. EV tires are an interesting compromise for tire makers how do you make a low rolling restance tire that still has good dynamic performance? Not as easy as it seems. A good example is the EQ amg models. I'm sure that a large portion of the milage difference is the tires. The PS4s are grippier than the goodyears. The extra juice the motors can provide is not factor since milage estimates are calculated in ECO mode which should be the same electrical draw in the 580 or the AMG!

I am envious of people who can drive 20k on their EQS. Looks like mine only wants to be driven from the Dealership service department to my home and back... Is there a software update (geo-fencing?) to address this issue of it always wanting to go back to the service department?

🤣
It has separation anxiety!
Aside from a very rare low speed "thump" and the expected first couple of over the air updates blank screens, mine has been perfect.
If your car has been PITA, have MB buy it back!
