Mild CarPlay annoyance… is there a solution?
If I have CarPlay (Apple) enabled and a text message comes in, the display briefly switches to the CarPlay screen. Because I prefer the Mercedes nav map, this brief flash of CarPlay is annoying.
Is there a setting or a combination of settings that would prevent this?

Not really. While CarPlay is enabled all phone functions are handled by CarPlay, so if you get a phone call or a text message it switches to CarPlay. Just curious, but if you are using the MB nav, what do you have CarPlay enabled for? If you disable CarPlay, then the phone functions are handled over Bluetooth and it won't switch to CarPlay.
I either use CarPlay or I use the MB system, but not both at the same time. So if I use the MB nav I disconnect CarPlay, otherwise I use CarPlay for navigation and everything else, but I don't do a hybrid where I use MB for navigation and CarPlay for phone functions.

^^ That would work if you don't wanna know that you received a new text message. If that's what OP wants then also check out the following link. Not sure if the setting above is the same, but you can control if you want new text messages to be announced on CarPlay or not.
