Well, technically the earthquake alert is supposed to give you advanced warning. If it's already shaking then it's too late 
. Today was the official shakeout test for California. When I saw the alert on my phone yesterday morning, I thought they had messed up the date. I was in bed asleep and didn't feel anything. Only realized later in the day that it was an actual earthquake...haha.
