Tesla adaptor

Do I have to buy the Tesla charging adaptor from MB or is a third party adaptor fine.

And if it is, can anyone recommend one?

You don’t have to buy from MB. There are several third party adapters out there. Just search Amazon. Lectron makes the MB model. I bought one from MB thru mbpartsource.com. I figured for peace of mind I got the recommended model so problems with the adapter would be minimized. There have been several threads on this subject.

I got the MB adapter for this reason below. Lectron said Mercedes adapters are not just branded. Here's their reply:

Thank you for reaching out to us, and we’re thrilled to hear that you love the NACS to CCS Adapter!

While the adapter you purchased from Lectron may appear similar to the one Mercedes is offering ,there are a few key differences:

  • Interlock Pin: Mercedes' adapter includes an added interlock pin, which is designed to provide an additional level of safety.
  • Thermal Sensors: Mercedes' version has three thermal sensors inside, whereas Lectron’s adapter has two thermal sensors.
  • Appearance: Mercedes' adapter has a more refined surface graining, giving it a sleeker, more polished look.

These differences mainly reflect Mercedes’ focus on added safety features and aesthetics, but both adapters are designed to work with their respective charging systems.

Thanks for this addtional info. I've got my MB/Tesla adapter since the first available at my MB dealer and wondered if any differences with Lectron. I haven't tried it at Tesla supercharge stations yet. Just having another option to charge while I'm on roadtrip.

Thx for the info. Didn’t know that even though both adapters are made by Lectron, the Mercedes version is significantly different. Glad I selected the MB version.

For that price, why NOT use the MB adapter? Peace of mind, and no/fewer complaints from Mercedes if you have a problem.

Yeah the last thing you want is a burned connector on the car side and have Mercedes decline the warranty by saying that was your adapter that caused that.

Here is the sticker the MB dealership attached to my car a few weeks ago reference the NACS adapter. Don't like they put it over a charging indicator. It recommends the use of an approved adapter.

That is a super stupid place to put it. But, the NHTSA doc doesn't show anything better.
