Thumbs up No. CA SLK/SLR Meet & Drive 5/14/05

SLK RUN INTO HISTORY SATURDAY, MAY 14, 2005

Chuck and Sam Curtis have planned a fun and historical trip for us. The drive should be interesting, particular for those who have never been to San Juan Bautista or are interested in California history. We had a marvelous time last month and this month we’re completing our history work by driving to the Donner Party’s final resting place. Owen has June ready to roll. It just might be in Palo Alto. July might be a “how to detail your car” instead of a drive. I think Carlos is looking for a parade that we can enter and entertain the crowd. More later.

If you have an FRS/GMRS radio, be sure to bring it along. It really helps during the caravan.

Details: May 14th: 10:30 AM meeting at Bernal Plaza, San Jose - gather in the parking lot.*

Driving South on Hwy 85 or Hwy 101, exit at Bernal Road in South San Jose and go West, approximately 3/4 mile.* The cross street is San Ignacio.* Turn in at McDonalds.*

Meet behind Washington Mutual near Starbucks, at 10:30 AM. We have small bit of business to do in the parking lot, so a minor push back on our usual drive start time.
*
Drive will commence at 11:31 AM. West along Bernal Road and left at Santa Teresa.* Some roads are narrow, watch for bicyclists.* Right on Bailey Road.* Left on McKean at Calero Reservoir.** McKean becomes Uvas Road.* We will pass Uvas Reservoir on left.* Uvas intersects with Watsonville Road; bear right.
*
Exit Watsonville road at Hwy 152.* Turn right.* Continue on Hwy 152 to Madonna Inn.* Two paved turnouts available if needed.* Stop at Madonna Inn for elevated view of beautiful downtown Watsonville and the Pacific Coast with Japan beyond.* Parking ample normally.
*
After leaving Madonna Inn we will continue west on Hwy 152 to Carlton/Casserly Road.* Turn left at Carlton.* Follow Carlton through Strawberry & Raspberry Farm country, to Hwy 129.* Left on Hwy 129 East and cross over Hwy 101.* Hwy 129 becomes San Juan Hwy. (The backdoor to San Juan Bautista)
*
Continue on San Juan Road to Monterey St. in San Juan Bautista.* We will take a short detour to Boot Hill where*Breen Family, Donner Party survivors are buried.* A personal short verbal history lesson will be done, by a descendent.
*
After leaving the cemetery we will drive down 3rd Street to Jardines Mexican Garden Restaurant,*115 3rd Street, (831-623-4466) for lunch at approximately 1:15 PM.* Parking in front will be difficult.* There may be numerous open spaces on the side streets, or on 4th Street.* We will likely not be able to park together. Besides, it might upset the locals
to see so many beautiful SLK’s all together. We’ll try but be prepared to park individually.
*
Drive time is approximately one hour and fifteen minutes, plus two15 minute stops at Madonna Inn and cemetery.* After lunch there can be a brief walking tour of the Main Plaza and view of the San Juan Bautista Mission, if any are interested.* There will also be a post lunch additional*drive which will include approximately 20 miles up and down
of a twisting, climbing, scenic*road that leads to Fremont Peak (El. 3169 ft.) State Park.*
*
To exit town, (San Juan Bautista) take 3rd or 4th Street South to Hwy 156.* Turn right.* Go approximately 3 miles to Hwy 101 North.

See you on the 14th.
