Rally to Mt. Rainier with Keith Martin

Bring Your Vintage or Modern Mercedes on the Rally to Mt. Rainier on Saturday, July 30th, 8:45 am.
By Sam Chinakos, Portland Section

Have you ever wanted to drive your Mercedes in the Mille Miglia? Would you like to drive on great roads with awesome scenery without travelling to Italy? We have created our own rally, and it will be more fun and open to all models of Mercedes-Benz.
The Portland and Seattle Sections are teaming up on the Rally to Mount Rainier, an easy-to-drive fun rally through the spectacular scenery of Mt. Rainier National Park, Elbe, Longmire and then on to our final destination at Paradise Inn on the south side of Mt Rainier.

The Seattle Section will meet at 8:45 am at Starbucks at 601 South Grady Way in Renton off of Hiway 167 and I-405. (North on Rainier Avenue, left on Grady Way) We will grab coffee and be on the road by 9:00 am.

We will head south on Hiway 167 for 30 minutes, travel east to WA 512 and then another 30 minutes south on Hiway 161/Meridian Avenue. The route will take us through Eatonville where we will drive on Hiway 7 and meet up with the Portland Section cars in Elbe at the Hobo Inn at 10:30 am. The Hobo Inn is located at 54106 Mountain Hwy, Elbe, WA 98330.

The Mercedes caravan will continue via Longmire, into the Mt. Rainier National Park and 12 mile up the scenic curvy drive to Paradise Inn at the 5,400 feet elevation. The Mt. Rainier National Park entrance fee is a one time charge of $15 or $30 for an annual pass online at www.discoverpass.wa.gov.

Bring a picnic lunch or eat with us at Paradise Inn or snack bar. There will be raffle prizes, some give always and awards for the ‘Spirit of the Mille Miglia’ and farthest driven. Keith Martin, publisher of Sports Car Market Magazine, will join the tour in his 1959 220S Ponton sedan. Can somebody bring a car older than Keith’s? The winner will get a special award.

We will publish a route book and information on trails and gift shop at Paradise, or help out those planning their own route home. Plan on hiking the trails around Paradise. Bring a camera, the scenery and wildlife is amazing too.
We are trying a new electronic registration system for this event. You can register for this event at this link: www.motorsportreg.com and search on the event calendar for MBCA Rally to Rainier on July 30th. Hope to see you and your older or newer Mercedes-Benz for this classic and fun drive.

Regional Show & Shine 2011

Saturday: August 13th, 3:00 pm at Phil Smart Mercedes-Benz, Airport Way, Seattle to XXX Rootbeer, Issaquah
Sunday: August 14th, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Nile Country Club, Mountlake Terrace

MBCA members across the Pacific Northwest are invited to participate in the Regional Show and Shine 2011 hosted by the Seattle Section. The first event of the weekend will be on Saturday, August 13th. Our starting point will be at Phil Smart Mercedes-Benz Airport Way at 3:00pm. Tony Andrews will lead us on a scenic caravan drive around beautiful Lake Washington ending at the XXX Rootbeer Drive-In in Issaquah, a popular local hangout for car enthusiasts. Our out-of-town guests may want to take advantage of the special hotel rate that the Hilton Garden Inn Seattle/Issaquah is offering as the “Official Hotel for the 2011 XXX Car Show Season”. Mention that you will be attending a car show at XXX Rootbeer and receive a special hotel rate of $79.00 plus a $10 cash rebate at the restaurant if you show them your hotel receipt.

The Show and Shine itself will be on Sunday, August 14th. Once again we will be on the beautiful picnic grounds of the Nile Country Club located at 6601-224th Street SW, Mountlake Terrance, WA. just west of I-5 at exit 177. The annual Show and Shine is one of our most popular events of the year with an exciting display of the Mercedes-Benz marquee ranging from the newest models to the oldest classics all polished to perfection. Local dealers and vendors will provide display cars, door prizes and demonstrations as well.

O’Callahan’s catering will be offering their Firecracker BBQ at this year’s event. Be sure to pre-register so you don’t miss out on this dynamite combination of BBQ Brisket-Slow Cooked Texas Style, Country Style Pork Ribs, Spicy Smoked Sausage Dogs, Southern Baked Beans, Red Potato Salad, Apple Cabbage Slaw with Poppy Seed Dressing, Homemade Corn Muffins with Honey Butter, Ice Cold Watermelon, Warm Cherry and Apple Cobbler.

Send your pre-registration form by August 10th to John DeYoung at 18316 129th Ave NE, Bothell, WA 98011. Checks should be made payable to MBCA – Seattle Section.

Thank you to all of our volunteers who have offered their help. It’s not too late to join in. If you would like to volunteer, please contact John at jed2504@aol.com.
